Darajani Market

Targ Darajani

Today, the 3rd day of stay in the capital of Zanzibar - Stone Town. We decided to visit the biggest market in Stone Town, namely Darajani Market, which means "Main Market" in Swahili. It is located in the old town and is the main bazaar in Stone Town.

Dziasiaj 3 dzień pobytu w stolicy Zanzibaru - Stone Town. Postanowiliśmy odwiedzić największy targ w Stone Town, a mianowicie Targ Darajani, co oznacza w języku swahili ,,Główny Trag,,. Umiejscowiony jest on w starej części miasta i jest głównym bazarem w Stone Town.

The market is an oblong hall where you can buy literally everything, fruit, vegetables, spices, electronics, clothes, fish and meat. Trading also takes place outside.

Targ to podłużna hala w której można kupić dosłownie wszystko, owoce, warzywa, przyprawy, elektronikę, odzież, ryby czy mięso. Handel odbywa się również na zewnątrz.

The colorful fruit and vegetable stands and spice stands made a great impression on me.

Duże wrażenie zrobiły na mnie kolorowe stoiska z owocami i warzywami i stoiska z przyprawami.

Press for squeezing sugar cane juice. Juice combined with lime and crushed ice is a great thirst-quencher.

Prasa do wyciskania soku z trzciny cukrowej. Sok w połączeniu z limonką i pokruszonym lodem świetnie gasi pragnienie.

However, the fish market hall made the biggest impression on me. More precisely, the specific smell made the biggest impression, to put it mildly - an unbearable stench.

Największe jednak wrażenie wywarła na mnie hala targowa z rybami. A precyzyjniej, to największe wrażenie zrobił specyficzny zapach, delikatnie mówiąc - smród nie do wytrzymania.

Nevertheless, it was worth a look at what the fishermen were offering, and there was a lot of it. All kinds of seafood, fish, crabs etc.

Wszelkiej maści owoce morza, ryby, kraby etc.

I decided to ask how much individual fish and octopus cost and compare it with the prices offered by restaurateurs. For the sake of simplicity, the USD exchange rate is around 2,300 shillings. For example, in the photo above, we see fish. White Snapper, Parrot Fish, and Red Snapper from above. All 1.5 thousand. Zanzibar shillings for 1 fish. In a restaurant, such a fish is about 15,000 shillings.

Postanowiłem zapytać, ile kosztują poszczególne ryby i ośmiornice i porównać to z cenami jakie oferują nam restauratorzy. Dla ułatwienia kurs USD to około 2300 szylingów. Na przykład na powyższym zdjęciu widzimy ryby. Od góry White Snapper, ryba papuzia, i Red Snapper. Wszystkie po 1,5 tyś. szylingów zanzibarskich za 1rybę. W restauracji taka rybka to około 15 tyś szylingów.

A large octopus costs 25,000 shillings. You can make 8 large portions of it. The cost of one serving in a restaurant is about 20,000 shillings. In general, restaurateurs do not contribute to the business.

Duża ośmiornica to koszt 25 tyś szylingów. Można z niej zrobić 8 pokaźnych porcji. Cena jednej porcji w restauracji to koszt około 20 tyś szylingów. Generalnie restauratorzy nie dokładają do interesu.

Anglican Cathedral

Katedra Anglikańska

We finish our walk around the market and go to the Cathedral. In the center of Stone Town there is a monumental building, the Anglican Cathedral. Not long ago, the cathedral with the symbol of the cross was the center of the island's livestock trade.

Inside the cathedral, at the altar, there is a round white stone in the floor. Once upon a time there was a tree to which slaves were tied and whipped, thus testing their endurance. Next to the Cathedral, there is a market where slaves were traded.

Nearby, there is a monument commemorating the torments of slaves. It shows four African slaves chained together by chains and hoops mounted on their necks. In this way, they marched hundreds of kilometers, transporting valuable goods that would later be sold: ivory or exotic wood.

Gift shop

Sklep z pamiątkami

On the way, we visit a souvenir shop. The shop owner rebukes us inside. Inside, a lot of handicrafts, but our attention was drawn to the masks.

Po drodze odwiedzamy sklep z pamiątkami. Właściciel sklepu nagania nas do środka. Wewnątrz mnóstwo rękodzieła, naszą uwagę przykuły jednak maski.

Some, especially the studded ones, looked like sexual props. Well, we did not buy any, because the seller does not issue any document or receipt of the purchase, which may result in a problem or even a fine when crossing the border.

Walk around the city and sunset

Spacer po mieście i zachód słońca

We decided to spend the rest of the day walking freely around the city.

Narrow streets, camouflaged shops, a nice boulevard and a local beach. Life goes on with its slow rhythm, as they say in Zanzibar, "Pole Pole", that is slowly.

Wąskie uliczki, zakamuflowane sklepiki, ładny bulwar i miejscowa plaża.
