MI VIAJE A CUBA POR 300$ - MY TRIP TO CUBA FOR 300$

Hello to all the Great Hive Community and Haveyoubeenhere today** I will tell you about my trip to Cuba in 2015 at a cost of 300$ from Venezuela**.✈️🏖🤑

image.png

It was the beginning of the year and a friend told me that he had been in Cuba in December and the experience had been very satisfactory, the trip was made through a travel agency of an acquaintance which offered very good tour packages, good prices and excellent service.

Cuba is one of the thirteen island countries of the Caribbean Sea near the coast of the United States, it has fifteen provinces and Havana is its capital and most populated city. It has a tropical climate and temperatures are high, with annual averages ranging from 24°C in the plains to 34°C on the eastern coasts. Its white sand beaches are very popular with tourists, and it has tobacco fields for the production of its traditional cigars.

As the days went by I became more interested in her experience and I asked her for the details of the trip and the average costs, a mutual friend also listened to the information and after some consideration we decided to make the trip together.👱‍♀👩

Months go by and nothing happens and in the month of May I receive a call 📞 from my friend informing me that the agency will promote packages for June, I immediately tell my friend and we are attentive to the information.

The agency offered nine (9) days in Cuba between Havana (capital of the country) and Varadero (very popular tourist area for its beautiful beaches) for a cost of $300 including airfare, transfers, lodging in a four star hotel, buffet breakfasts, lunches and tours with a guide in Havana, lodging in a four star hotel with all meals and beverages included in Varadero.

I want to emphasize that at that time Venezuela was already living one of the highest inflation in the world with a closing as of December 2015 of 180.9% according to the official rate of the Central Bank of Venezuela BCV.

However, the working professional middle class could afford those pleasures, even with the salaries of the time, it was possible to save, opt for bank loans, financing with credit cards and many other things. For the month of May the Minimum Wage was Bs. 6,746.00 which would be equivalent to $33.00.

So, we started our trip 🛫

Photo taken from the plane

... When we arrived to the island at night hours due to a delay in the international airport of Maiquetía - Venezuela, the buses were waiting for us to take us to the hotel, we were forty Venezuelans eager to know the island and have a great time. We stayed at The Habana Libre Hotel. One of the largest hotels in Cuba with 25 floors, located in Vedao.

Hotel room and pool photos

The next morning we met at the restaurant, joined some guys and took the transport (old car that has an established route and charges per passenger) to one of the largest supermarkets in Havana, which also had a grocery and appliance store. I start to see the prices and make the conversion, Cuba at that time had two official currencies, the Cuban peso and CUC (Cuban convertible peso) which had a value equal to one U.S. dollar, 1 CUC = 1 USD. That day we did not buy anything because we wanted to visit other places to compare prices.

image.png

When we returned to the hotel we had lunch at one of its restaurants. It started to rain very hard so we had to go up to the room, in the afternoon we went out for an ice cream and walk around.

image.png

image.png

Cuba did not offer free internet so we had to buy a card with the amount of your choice for example 10$ to opt for wifi and be able to communicate with our relatives in Venezuela. Mineral water is not free either, in the hotel you only had the service in the restaurants and you could not fill any bottle, they did not put bottles in the rooms so you had to buy and it was expensive for what we were used to in Venezuela, example 5 liters of water for 5$.

The next day, after breakfast we started a trip to a coffee plantation on the outskirts of the city via Pinar del Rio. We were greeted by local musicians, then a tour of the hacienda and finally lunch. In Cuba they eat a lot of pork, it was already the second lunch on the island with the same type of meat.

image.png

image.png

image.png

We arrived at the hotel and we had the afternoon to know more on our own, we returned to the car market of the previous day and bought some items such as coffee and rum as Cuba is characterized by having very good quality in these items, Havana Club brand rum from $ 2 a bottle, they also have aged at a higher price, coffee at $ 7 a kilo. For my daughter I bought several types of chocolates including hazelnut spread.

At night we went with several companions to the boardwalk, many people walking, doing some music, dancing, stores open 24 hours and the police guarding the area. At first I was afraid to go out at night because in Venezuela it is quite a challenge, then I was getting used to the atmosphere and enjoying the security they offer.

image.png

Third day on the island and it was time to visit Old Havana which is the oldest area of the capital with a space of 5 kilometers, there are still remains of walls that protected the island for 2 centuries. In 1982 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. It is one of the most touristic areas, it has restored churches, historic buildings, fortresses, restaurants, bookstores, museums, clothing stores among others.

Cocotaxi, tourist transportation in the area.

We also found La Bodeguita del Medio, a typical and touristic restaurant in Havana. Many writers, politicians and actors have visited it and each one leaves a souvenir such as photos, footprints and signatures.

image.png

image.png

At the end of the tour of this wonderful place, buses were waiting for us at the end of the Malecon to take us to the restaurant for a delicious lunch. The Havana Malecon is 8 kilometers long and has six lanes where you can enjoy beautiful views of the bay, locals fishing, enjoying the sea, musicians, bike rides and more.

Fourth and last day in Havana, after walks, shopping for handicrafts, junk food such as hot dogs at 0.5$, canned soft drinks at 0.5$, ice cream from 1$, pizzas from 1$, many companions enjoyed the hotel pool, and much more, we said goodbye to the city in the hotel disco, beers at 3$.

It dawns and very early we go down with our suitcases to have breakfast and head to Varadero. Our tour guide, a native, was waiting for us to accompany us on the tour and explain a little of what we saw on the way. We made a stop and continued on our way. The distance between Havana and Varadero is 140.4 km.

We arrived at The Barcelo Solymar Arenas Blancas hotel, located on the beachfront in Varadero, with 20 kilometers of sandy beach with crystal clear and calm waters, ideal for children, restaurants, bars, 3 swimming pools, discos and many activities on the beach, day and night. The heat was strong, the difference in climate between Havana and Varadero was noticeable.

image.png

image.png

image.png

This hotel included all meals and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in all its restaurants, mineral water, soft drinks and coffee were refilled daily in the room. The internet service was paid but cheaper than in Havana, cards from 6$. We enjoyed three days of beach and swimming pool, activities such as sailing, catamaran rides, water sports, bonfires on the beach, discotheques, at no additional cost.

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

For our part we left the hotel one day to get to know the surroundings, we walked and made stops to take pictures, visit stores and buy various products to bring back to family and friends in Venezuela. Varadero offers a bus ride but we could not enjoy it, only the photos.

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

Last night in Varadero and we went to the disco until 4:00am from there to the room to get ready and be in the lobby at 6: am, with breakfast ready we were expected to leave for the José Martí International Airport located 18 kilometers from Havana, the same one that received us.

image.png

Thus I conclude my nine-day trip, an enriching experience, its inhabitants with a lot of human quality and very helpful.

I want to emphasize that today it would be impossible for me to make this trip, the economy of my country has declined in recent years, so much so that since November 2017 we live a hyperinflation with rising prices of products that had already been evident since 2014, by the drop in oil prices resulting in cuts in cash flow, in addition to corruption, exchange control, among others.

In 2019 the accumulated inflation was 9,585.5% according to the rate of the Central Bank of Venezuela, in 2020 it was 2,959.8% and from January to April 2021 it is 183.8%, the minimum wage decreed in May is Bs. 10,000,000.00 or $3.2 approximately. Our currency the Bolivar (Bs.) is devaluated so we have to rely on the dollar ($).

I hope you enjoyed this post, thanks for making it this far,
