How to love your hometown, which you once loved for a long time ago? This is a very important issue for me now! Well, one way is to pretend to be... a tourist. To try to imagine yourself as part of this colorful multinational crowd of people who came from around the world. To immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the ancient city of Lviv!
Як полюбити рідне місто, яке колись давно любив? Зараз для мене це дуже важливе питання! Адже скоро мені слід буде переселятись зі села. Ну, один зі способів - прикинутись... туристом. Спробувати уявити себе частинкою цього кольорового багатонаціонального натовпу людей, що приїхали з різних куточків планети. Зануритись в атмосферу давнього міста Лева, ніби я тут вперше!
That's what I did one beautiful summer day. Several of my choristers and I went on a tour of the dungeons of Lviv!
Why dungeons? I do not know. It was my idea, I am always attracted by something mysterious. I thought that teenagers should like it too:) And so I asked my old friend Igor to give us a tour.
In fact, there are a lot of dungeons in Lviv, not all of them are open to visitors. However, we were lucky to visit four!
Саме так я і зробила одного прекрасного літнього дня. Ми з кількома моїми хористами вирушили на екскурсію підземеллями Львова! Чому саме підземеллями? Я й сама не знаю. Це була моя ідея, мене завжди манить щось таємниче. Я подумала, що підліткам теж має це сподобатися:) І ось я попросила мого давнього друга Ігоря провести нам екскурсію. Насправді у Львові дуже багато підземель, не всі вони відкриті для відвідувачів. Проте нам пощастило побувати у чотирьох!
First we went to the beautiful church of Peter and Paul, which is still popularly called the "Church of the Jesuits." Now it is the city center. It is hard to imagine that once the temple was built on the very edge and adjacented to a high defensive wall, from which, unfortunately, nothing is left :( The dungeons there are huge. There is something interesting in each hall.
Спочатку ми вирушили до красивого храму Петра і Павла, який у народі досі називають "Костел єзуїтів". Зараз це центр міста. Важко собі уявити, що колись храм був побудований на самому краї і примикав до високого оборонного муру, від якого на жаль нічого не залишилося:( Підземелля там величезні. Думаю нам показують десь третину. У кожному залі є щось цікаве.

The children looked with interest at the models showing the church in section. On the stand we saw what different projects of the building, which was erected in 1610-1630, looked like. Temple is modeled on the Church of Il Gesu in Rome.
Оскільки фасад церкви зараз на реставрації, то діти з цікавістю оглянули макети, які показують церкву у розрізі. На стенді ми побачили як виглядали різні проекти будівлі, яка постала у 1610-1630 роках. Вона збудована за зразком церкви Іль-Джезу, що знаходиться у Римі.
The Christian Order of the Jesuits (officially called the Society of Jesus) was founded in 1534 by Ignatius Loyola to strengthen the power and authority of the Catholic Church. Monks developed education at monasteries. It was prestigious to study in their schools/colleges. Our famous Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky studied here, at the Lviv Collegium.

The Jesuits were expelled twice. At the end of the 18th century, Lviv came under the rule of the Austrian Empire, which liquidated many monasteries. In the period between the two world wars, the Jesuits returned. However, after World War II, Ukraine became part of the Soviet Union. Here religion was not respected. Former temples were turned into warehouses, dance clubs, museums or granaries.
This church was lucky, because there was a warehouse of books of the National Library. About 3 million copies!
Liturgies are now held in the church, but it needs serious restoration.

Християнський Орден Єзуїтів виник у 1534 р. для укріплення влади та авторитету католицької церкви. Монахи розвивали освіту при монастирях. Вчитися у їхніх школах/колегіях було престижно. У Львівській колегії навчався гетьман Богдан Хмельницький.
Єзуїтів виганяли звідси двічі. Наприкінці 18 століття Львів опинився під владою Австрійської імперії, яка ліквідувала чимало монастирів. У період між двома світовими війнами єзуїти повернулись. Проте після другої світової Україна стала частиною Радянського союзу. Тут релігія була не в пошані. Із колишніх храмів робили склади, танцювальні клуби, музеї або зерносховища. Цьому костелу пощастило, адже тут був склад книг національної бібліотеки. Біля 3-х мільйонів примірників! Зараз церква є діюча, проте потребує серйозної реставрації.

In the following halls we got in different epochs from the Middle Ages to the New Age. With the help of models we can see the development of our city.
Undoubtedly, these models will be of most interest to locals. This is a great and must-see place to study history for pupils and students! I can spend hours looking at these tiny houses and comparing them to the present. My young friends were also interested!
У наступних залах ми машиною часу потрапили в різні епохи від Середньовіччя до Нового Часу. За допомогою макетів можемо побачити розвиток нашого міста. Безперечно, ці макети найбільше зацікавлять місцевих жителів. Це є чудове і обов'язкове місце для вивчення історії школярами! Я можу годинами розглядати ці крихітні будинки і порівнювати за теперішнім. Моїм юним друзям теж було цікаво!
What I like most is this option with red houses with high roofs (photo below right). It was a Gothic Lviv, built by the Germans on the order of the Polish king, because since 1340 this territory was owned by Poles! Unfortunately, 99% of this Lviv burned down in the great fires of 1527. The Renaissance has survived much better.
Найбільше мені подобається оцей варіант з червоними будинками з високими дахами (фото справа внизу). Це був Львів готичний, збудований німцями! На жаль 99% цього Львова згоріло у великі пожежі 1527 року. Епоха Ренесансу збереглась значно краще.
In the last hall there is a large stone coffin, the most interesting exhibit that fascinates tourists. This sarcophagus was ordered by a one bishop. It is made of marble and alabaster. Thieves, looters who wanted to rob the coffin, could not lift the lid! It was smashed with a large hammer. However, the bandits were disappointed, because it was empty. For some reason, the bishop was buried elsewhere.
В останній залі є велика кам'яна труна, мабуть найцікавіший експонат, який захоплює туристів. Цей саркофаг замовив собі один єпископ. Він виготовлений з мармуру та алебастру. Злодії мародери, які хотіли пограбувати труну, не змогли підняти кришки! Її розбивали великим молотом. Проте бандитів чекало розчарування, адже там було пусто. З якихось причин епископа поховали в іншому місці.
Well... After such a walk, it is very nice to go out into the daylight and see living people;) We go to the Dominican Cathedral through the beautiful old Armenian street. This is one of my favorite streets. Here is the ancient Armenian Cathedral. Its bell tower is high and attracts attention with interesting turrets at the corners.
Ну що ж... Після такої прогулянки дуже навіть приємно вийти на денне світло і побачити живих людей;) А їх тут як завжди чимало. Ми йдемо до Домініканського собору через красиву старовинну вулицю Вірменську. Я стараюсь вловити кожну деталь розповіді. Це одна з моїх улюблених вулиць. Ось древній Вірменський собор. Його дзвіниця висока і привертає увагу цікавими башточками по кутах.
Here is a beautiful gallery and flowers in the courtyard of the temple, as well as a wooden bas-relief with a crucifix.
Ось чудова галерея і квіти у подвір'ї храму,а також дерев'яний барельєф із розп'яттям.
And here we pass an interesting thematic cafe "Kerosene lamp". Here is a large collection of kerosene lamps. It was in Lviv at the end of the 19th century that two inventors (Jan Zech and Ignatius Lukasevich) invented a substance such as kerosene!!.
А ось ми проходимо повз цікаве тематичне кафе "Гасова лямпа". Тут зібрана велика колекція гасових ламп. Саме у Львові два винахідники наприкінці 19 століття винайшли таку речовину як гас.
By the way, the cafe has their sculptures. One scientist looks out of the balcony, and the other sits solemnly on a bench. He often has to pose for a photo.
До речі у кафе є їхні скульптури. Один вчений виглядає з балкону, а інший поважно сидить на лавці. Йому доводиться частенько позувати для фото.
Finally, we approached the Dominican Cathedral, which was built in the late 18th century in the Baroque style. Majestic and beautiful building, right?
І нарешті ми підійшли до Домініканського собору, який був збудований вкінці 18 століття у стилі бароко.
We go to the dungeons, which again give us coolness. And at the same time we gain knowledge. At this place at the beginning of the founding of the city was a wooden palace of Prince Lev (its hypothetical reconstruction is presented in the picture). By the way, the city "Lviv" is named in his honor. Leo's wife later invited the Dominicans here. It was a very powerful order, founded in 1215 in Toulouse, Spain by Saint Dominic.
In Ukraine, the Dominicans had several monasteries.
Прямуємо у підземелля, які знову дарують нам прохолоду... І заодно здобуваємо знання. На цьому місці ще на початках заснування міста був дерев'яний палац князя Лева (його гіпотетичну реконструкцію подано на картинці). До речі, саме на його честь названо місто.
Згодом дружина Лева запросила сюди домініканців. Це був дуже потужний орден, заснований у 1215 році в іспанській Тулузі святим Домініком. В Україні домінікани мали декілька великих монастирів.
In the photo above we see an ancient map made by monks.
In a few small rooms we can see a lot of interesting things. Wrought iron crosses, wooden water supply (it was hard for me to imagine, but in the Middle Ages in Lviv they were used). There are also themed rooms here: in one of them the beautiful Halshka Ostrozka hides from her husband. She was a very beautiful and rich, but just as unhappy woman. In one of the halls there is a small exhibition of children's paintings.
У кількох невеликих кімнатах ми можемо побачити чимало цікавинок. Ковані хрести, дерев'яний водопровід (мені було важко уявити, але в середньовіччі у Львові такими користувалися). Є тут і тематичні кімнати: в одній з них красуня Гальшка Острозька переховується від свого чоловіка. Це була дуже гарна і багата, але так само сильно нещаслива жінка. В одному із залів є невелика виставка дитячих картин.
