When we made the (impulsive) decision to visit Uruguay, we didn't consider many things at first, but we weren't used to doing it either, since all our trips are usually very improvised. We had only decided that instead of going back and forth during the day, we would stay one night to sleep, since there was not much difference between buying the daily tour or individual tickets. But of course, this increased our estimated budget a bit and now I'll tell you why. For now I can only say that this forced us to only do free tours, like this visit to the emblematic bullring in Colonia del Sacramento 😃.
Cuando tomamos la (impulsiva) decisión de ir a visitar Uruguay no consideramos muchas cosas en el primer momento, pero tampoco estábamos acostumbradas a hacerlo ya que todos nuestros viajes suelen ser muy improvisados. Solo habíamos decidido que en lugar de ir y volver en el día, nos quedaríamos una noche a dormir, ya que no había tanta diferencia entre comprar el tour diario o pasajes individuales. Pero claro, esto aumentó un poco nuestro presupuesto estimado y ya les contaré por qué. Por ahora solo puedo decir que esto nos obligó a realizar solo paseos que fueran gratis, como esta visita a la emblemática plaza de toros de Colonia del Sacramento 😃.
Sure, all the rides we've done before were within our country, so we never had to worry about things like CURRENCY EXCHANGE. Since we were going to stay only one night, I thought we were not going to spend that much so my original idea was to directly exchange our Argentine pesos for Uruguayan pesos and that would be it. But when we started to investigate a little more we found that this change did not favor us at all. In Uruguay (and surely in the other countries as well) our currency is extremely devalued, so we should hace to hand over thousands of our pesos just to get some bills from there. This was really sad, the devaluation had never hit me as hard as it did until then.
Claro, todos los paseos que hicimos anteriormente fueron dentro de nuestro país, así que nunca tuvimos que preocuparnos por cosas como EL CAMBIO MONETARIO. Como íbamos a quedarnos solo una noche, pensaba que no íbamos a gastar tanto así que mi idea original era cambiar directamente nuestros pesos argentinos por pesos uruguayos y eso sería todo. Pero cuando nos pusimos a investigar un poco más nos encontramos con que ese cambio no nos favorecía en absoluto. En Uruguay (y seguramente en los otros países también) nuestra moneda está sumamente devaluada, por lo que teníamos que entregar miles de nuestros pesos solo para obtener algunos billetes de allí. Esto fue muy triste realmente, la devaluación nunca me había pegado tan fuerte como hasta en ese momento.
The most convenient form of exchange for us was to buy dollars in Argentina and sell them in Uruguay: this way we didn't lose so much money and we could counteract our inflation a little. Luckily, my friend was very cautious about this and took care of buying some dollar bills: in April we bought 50 USD for 10,000 ARS, for which in Uruguay they gave us 2,000 Uruguayan pesos. Ten thousand of ours to have two thousand of them, pretty sad I guess. And even sadder is knowing that today, in August of the same year, to buy 50 USD you need 14,000 ARS: the devaluation is taking us too fast...
La forma cambiaria que más nos convenía era comprar dólares en Argentina y venderlos en Uruguay: de esta forma no perdíamos tanto dinero y podríamos contrarrestar un poco nuestra inflación. Por suerte mi amiga fue muy precavida con esto y se ocupó de comprar algunos billetes de dólar: en Abril compramos 50 USD por 10.000 ARS, por los que en Uruguay nos dieron 2.000 pesos uruguayos. Diez mil nuestros para tener dos mil de ellos, bastante triste supongo. Y más triste es saber que hoy, en Agosto del mismo año para comprar 50 USD se necesitan 14.000 ARS: la devaluación nos está llevando demasiado rápido...
And it is not only the issue of change that is unfavorable for us Argentines, but all prices in general. Compared to our country, everything cost the fivefold as much if you converted the prices to our currency. I, who worry a lot about money, could not stop doing mental calculations and being scared by those values. The first dilemma we had was that we were thirsty and when we went to a store, a small bottle of soda cost about 500 ARS, when at home it cost less than 150 at that time... hahaha. We laughed for about half an hour until we finally bought it, but I wish I had known this much sooner and brought everything I needed with me on the ship 😂.
Y no es solo el tema del cambio el que es desfavorable para nosotros los argentinos, sino todos los precios en general. Comparado a nuestro país, todo costaba hasta el quíntuple si convertías los precios a nuestra moneda. Yo, que me preocupo bastante por el dinero, no podía dejar de hacer cuentas mentales y asustarme por esos valores. El primer dilema que tuvimos es que teníamos sed y cuando fuimos a una tienda, una pequeña botella de gaseosa costaba como 500 pesos nuestros, cuando en casa la misma salía menos de 150 en ese momento... jajaja. Estuvimos riéndonos como media hora hasta que al fin la compramos, pero me hubiese gustado saber esto mucho antes y traer todo lo necesario conmigo en el barco 😂.
Of the 2,000 Uruguayan pesos we had, 1,500 went to the hostel where we slept, so we were left with a tight budget of only 500 Uruguayan pesos to do whatever we wanted in those two days, counting that we also had to eat. The people there recommended that a good walk could be to go to the bullring, which we could reach by public transport for less than 50 Uruguayans between the two... Good price for our wallet at that time 😅.
De los 2000 pesos uruguayos que teníamos, 1500 se nos fueron en en el hostel en el que dormimos así que nos quedó un ajustado presupuesto de solo 500 pesos uruguayos para hacer lo que queramos en esos dos días, contando que también había que comer. Las personas de allí nos recomendaron que un buen paseo podría ser ir hasta la plaza de toros, a la que podíamos llegar en transporte público por menos de 50 uruguayos entre las dos... Buen precio para nuestra billetera de ese momento 😅.
The good thing is that the bus was paid in cash, unlike here where you have to use a magnetic card for everything... And with a short 20-minute trip from the center we were able to get to this square. There we found a beautiful building of exposed bricks, the Real de San Carlos bullring: it was not the Coliseum but it was a good Uruguayan equivalent 😅.
Lo bueno es que el colectivo se pagaba con efectivo, a diferencia de acá que tenes que usar una tarjeta magnética para todo... Y con un pequeño viaje de 20 minutos desde el centro pudimos llegar a esta plaza. Allí nos encontramos con un hermoso edificio de ladrillos a la vista, la plaza de toros Real de San Carlos: no era el coliseo pero era un buen equivalente uruguayo 😅.
This place had a small winery and cafeteria where you could enjoy a wine tasting and a snack. They also offered some guided tours inside the building, but they cost about 150 Uruguayan pesos for each one and, well, unfortunately our budget couldn't pay that. So I only had to see it from the outside 😂.
Este lugar contaba con una pequeña bodega y cafetería en donde se podía disfrutar de una degustación de vinos y algún bocadillo. También se ofrecían unas visitas guiadas por dentro del edificio, pero costaban como 150 pesos uruguayos por cada una y bueno, no nos daba el presupuesto lamentablemente. Así que solo tocó verlo desde afuera 😂.
The funny thing was that at the door we ran into other Argentine girls who were also out for a walk like us and also complained about how expensive everything was. I think that when they call us "dollars" we already cry a little, but we don't have to be so pessimistic and enjoy even what we can do. All this situation made me realize how much you have to save in this country to make a great trip abroad. I am very happy for those who achieve it ❤️.
Lo gracioso fue que en la puerta nos cruzamos con otras chicas argentinas que también estaban de paseo como nosotras y también se quejaban de lo caro que estaba todo jaja. Creo que cuando a nosotros nos dicen "dólares" ya lloramos un poco, pero tampoco hay que ser tan pesimistas y disfrutar aunque sea de lo que sí podemos hacer. Toda esta situación hizo que me dé cuenta de lo mucho que hay que ahorrar en este país para hacer un gran viaje al exterior. Me alegro mucho por los que lo logran ❤️.
Although we could not see much about this building from the inside, on the outside there was a lot of informative billboards that told that this place, which dates back to the 20th century, was restored relatively recently and that it is now a large space for various massive events, such as shows, recitals, etc. and fairs. Inside it, only one part has been restored and the other part has been left with the original ruins so as not to completely lose its history. But the best of all is that no bull suffers here anymore :p.
Aunque no pudimos ver mucho sobre este edificio por dentro, por fuera había mucha cartelera informativa que contaba que este lugar que data del siglo XX, fue restaurado hace relativamente poco y que ahora es un gran espacio para realizar diversos eventos masivos, como espectáculos, recitales y ferias. Dentro de él, se ha restaurado solo una parte y la otra se ha dejado con las ruinas originales para no perder del todo su historia. Pero lo mejor de todo es que ya ningún toro sufre aquí :p.
I'm a very simple person and when it comes to travel I am satisfied with little, just being there in that place and having seen it even from outside was enough for me. Of course I would have liked to have had more budget to be able to enter but I am not complaining so much either. Now I am a committed influencer regarding the Argentine-Uruguayan monetary exchange, and I recommend everyone not to forget to bring dollars, many dollars, as many as they can. Every cloud has a silver lining 😅.
Yo soy una persona muy sencilla y en cuanto a viajes me conformo con poco, solo con estar ahí en ese lugar y haberlo visto aunque sea desde afuera fue suficiente para mí. Por supuesto que me hubiese gustado tener más presupuesto para poder entrar pero tampoco me quejo tanto. Ahora soy una comprometida influencer con respecto al cambio monetario argentino-uruguayo, y les recomiendo a todos que no se olviden de llevar dólares, muchos dólares, todos los que puedan. No hay mal que por bien no venga 😅.
