We had already started the return home two days ago but far from being sad about it, we were enjoying it as much as when we went to our main destination. As we moved more than 2000 km from home, the return trip was a bit long so we had to make two intermediate stops to rest for the night. One of them was in the province of La Pampa, where we arrived very late and only slept to continue the trip very early the next day, and the second was in the city of Carhué, where we decided to stay a little longer to enjoy the Epecuen lagoon ❤️.
Ya habíamos emprendido el regreso a casa hacía dos días pero lejos de estar tristes por eso, lo estábamos disfrutando tanto como cuando íbamos a nuestro destino principal. Como nos alejamos más de 2000 km de casa, la vuelta se hizo un poco larga así que obligatoriamente tuvimos que hacer dos paradas intermedias para descansar a dormir. Una de ellas fue en la provincia de La Pampa, donde llegamos muy tarde y solo dormimos para continuar el viaje muy temprano al otro día, y la segunda fue en la ciudad de Carhué, en donde decidimos quedarnos un poco más para disfrutar de la laguna Epecuén ❤️.
We had already been in this place in August of last year and almost without thinking, we visited it again this summer. I usually say that visiting a place at least once makes me happy because I can say that I was there, but on this second visit we found a quite different place from the one we saw on the previous trip. This whole place has a very interesting history, exciting and sad at the same time, and walking around it gives you a strange feeling like melancholy. I have read several opinions of travelers who express feeling the same while they are walking there 🚗.
Nosotros ya habíamos estado en este lugar en Agosto del año pasado y casi sin pensarlo, lo volvimos a visitar este verano. Generalmente digo que con visitar un lugar al menos una vez ya estoy conforme porque puedo decir que estuve ahí, pero en esta segunda visita encontramos un lugar bastante distinto al que vimos en el viaje anterior. Todo este sitio tiene una historia bastante interesante, emocionante y triste al mismo tiempo, y pasear por allí te genera una sensación rara como de melancolía. He leído varias opiniones de viajeros que expresan sentirse igual mientras están de paseo por allí 🚗.
What happened in this place was that in 1985 the lagoon overflowed, flooding the entire town on its shores. This flooding was progressive, but managed to submerge everything 7 meters under water for more than 20 years. Over time, the water receded, leaving the ruins in sight of what was once a great tourist center in the south of Buenos Aires. In turn, the waters of this lake contain a very high level of salt, so there was a dehydration effect in the entire area. You can see the photos from when we visited Villa Epecuén in this post ⭐️.
Lo que ocurrió en este lugar fue que en el año 1985 la laguna desbordó, inundando todo el pueblo que tenía a sus orillas. Esta crecida fue progresiva, pero logró sumergir todo 7 metros bajo el agua durante más de 20 años. Con el tiempo, el agua se retiró dejando las ruinas a la vista de lo que alguna vez supo ser un gran centro turistico en el sur de Buenos Aires. A su vez, las aguas de este lago continenen un nivel muy elevado de sal, por lo que se produjo un efecto de deshidratación en toda el área. After settling in a nearby campsite, this time we decided to go to the lagoon to spend the afternoon as it was quite hot. We saw again the Municipal Slaughterhouse, one of the icons of the city of Carhué. This building remained standing throughout the flood, and even functioned for a time while still surrounded by water. It was a great work by the architect Salamone, who dedicated himself to making great imposing works like this one at various points in the interior of the province of Buenos Aires. Después de instalarnos en un camping cercano, esta vez decidimos acercarnos hasta la laguna para pasar la tarde ya que estaba bastante calurosa. Volvimos a ver el Matadero Municipal, uno de los íconos de la ciudad de Carhué. Este edificio se mantuvo en pie durante toda la inundación, incluso fucionó durante un tiempo aún rodeado de agua. Fue una gran obra del arquitecto Salamone, quién se dedicó a hacer grandes obras imponentes como esta en varios puntos del interior de la provincia de Buenos Aires. According to what they had told us at the tourist office, the entire area of the lake shore before reaching the ruins of the village had been transformed into an "Eco Sustainable Beach". In its heyday, Epecuén was as famous a summer resort as Mar del Plata on the coast, attracting many tourists from far and wide. I guess this place didn't want to lose that charm despite everything that happened, so they took it upon themselves to bring this place back ⭐️.
De acuerdo a lo nos habían dicho en la oficina de turismo, toda la zona de la costa del lago antes de llegar a las ruinas de la villa estaba transformado en una "Playa Eco Sustentable". En sus mejores momentos, Epecuén era un lugar para veranear tan famoso como Mar del Plata en la costa, por lo que atraía a muchos turistas de todas partes. Supongo que este sitio no quiso perder ese encanto a pesar de todo lo que sucedió, así que se encargaron de recuperar este lugar ⭐️.

The area of the coast of this lake is made of land and everything is prepared to be able to spend the day there. Since there are no trees to provide shade, there are several umbrellas, tables and chairs. There are also public restrooms and a small grocery store with basic supplies. In the lake there are also fabric hammocks to lie down and small docks to access the water avoiding all the marshy area of the shore 😃.
El área de la costa de este lago es de tierra y todo está preparado para poder pasar el día allí. Como no hay árboles que den sombra, hay varias sombrillas, mesas y sillas. También hay baños públicos y una pequeña proveeduría con insumos básicos. En el lago también hay hamacas de tela para recostarse y pequeños muelles para acceder al agua evitando toda la zona pantanosa de la orilla 😃.
One of the main attractions that this lagoon had and still has is its high salt content. The water and its muds are said to have healing properties for various diseases, so people perform various treatments and massages with them. One of the activities they did was to cover you with mud and leave you waiting for it to dry, so every once in a while you could see someone muddy 😅.
Uno de los principales atractivos que tenía y tiene esta laguna es su alto contenido de sal. Se dice que el agua y sus fangos tienen propiedades curativas de varias enfermedades, por lo que la gente realiza varios tratamientos y masajes con ellos. Una de las actividades que hacían era cubrirte de lodo y dejarte esperando a que se seque, por lo que cada tanto podías ver a alguna persona embarrada 😅.
On my previous trip I had shared with you a walk along the shore of this lake but it was completely different from what we saw this time. In the winter, the lake was covered with coarse salt: a thick layer that appeared to be snow but was nothing more than dehydrated water. I decided to go closer to that trunk that I had photographed that time and the place looked like a totally different landscape: the summer had dissolved all the salt and only the mud at the bottom remained. It's amazing to see how everything changes throughout the year, so I was glad I visited this place again ❣️.
En mi viaje anterior había compartido con ustedes un paseo por la costa de este lago pero era completamente diferente a lo que vimos esta vez. En el invierno, el lago estaba cubierto de sal gruesa: una gran capa que aparentaba ser nieve pero no era más que el agua deshidratada. Decidí acercarme hasta ese tronco que había fotografiado aquella vez y el lugar parecía otro paisaje totalmente distinto: el verano había disuelto toda la sal y solo quedaba el barro del fondo. Es increíble ver cómo cambia todo a lo largo del año, así que me alegré de haber vistado este lugar nuevamente ❣️.
And of course, we had to verify what they said about the water and its salinity so we didn't hesitate to get in the lagoon. After spending more than two weeks swimming in frozen lakes in Patagonia, getting into this warm water was a true blessing. The lagoon is not very deep: we could walk several meters and still the water was not up to our waist in this part. And when we took the dip, there was the desired effect: you floated! Instantly the water was pulling you up. I couldn't stop laughing at this, it was really cool and I'm glad I didn't have to travel as much to float as in the Dead Sea ❤️.
Y por supuesto, tuvimos que verificar lo que decían sobre el agua y su salinidad así que no dudamos en meternos a la laguna. Después de estar más de dos semanas nadando en lagos congelados de la patagonia, meternos en esta agua tibia fue una verdadera bendición. La laguna no tiene mucha profundidad: podíamos caminar varios metros y aún así el agua no nos llegaba a la cintura en esta parte. Y cuando nos dimos el chapuzón, ahí estaba el ansiado efecto: ¡flotabas! Instantaneamente el agua te tiraba hacia arriba. Yo no podía parar de reir con esto, era algo muy genial y me alegro no haber tenido que viajar tanto para flotar como en el Mar Muerto ❤️.
We had a great day at the lagoon. This summer was my longest time in the sun so I ended up with a pretty deep tan. I was also happy that I was able to swim there, since in August it was of course too cold. This place is truly incredible, due to its history, its landscapes and its changes during the year. If you have the opportunity to visit it, do not hesitate to do it because it is totally worth it 💛.
Pasamos un gran día en la laguna. Este verano fue el que más tiempo estuve al sol así que terminé con un bronceado bastante intenso. También estuve feliz de haber posido nadar allí, ya que en Agosto por supuesto hacía demasiado frío. Este lugar es de verdad increíble, por su historia, sus paisajes y sus cambios durante el año. Si tienen la oportunidad de visitarlo, no duden en hacerlo porque vale la pena por completo 💛.
