Con Dao, Vietnam: The Hidden island with a story to tell !

Hi Hive Family! 😊

Welcome to LanBear travel posts on Five Blog.

My first blog is going to be about a place not far from me, with being Vietnamese and proud my own country I chose to write about Con Dao Island. Now with Covid happening we have not been able to travel much so in a way one day when its all over and everybody here has itchy feet like me to see the world again maybe you will think about visiting this place or any other part of the country, I call "home".

Con Dao deserves the title of a resort style paradise with its clear blue waters and primeval untouched forest makes this island a true get away but with culture and history to go along with it. It’s no wonder as to why Travel Leisure Magazine voted Con Dao as one of the 10 most beautiful islands on the planet!
I have attached some photos for you see for yourself. This place has become popular with visitors in recent years but even with the people there you can always find your quiet place to reflect while watching the sunset or sunrise.

Con Dao deserves the title of a resort paradise voted by Travel-Leisure magazine as one of the 10 most beautiful islands on the planet, possessing a beautiful coast and primeval forest Con Dao increasingly attracting tourists to visit and rest.

I’m going to explain how to get there now as like I was when I first went there you may be thinking could this really be as good as I’m saying? Well by the end of this blog I really hope this could be the place for you to find yourself..✨✨✨

HOW CAN GET THERE ?

There is multiple ways of travelling there once you are in Vietnam for example:

BY AIR 🛫

You can take a 1-hour flight from most major cities to Con Dao Airport (VCS) which is located on the main island of Con Son. It is approximately 13kms from the airport to the town which will take about a leisurely 20min to arrive. Many people take this option as its quicker.

BY BOAT

The more scenic route. So lets say for example you are in Ho Chi Minh City and you wish to go Con Dao you will need to get to Vung Tau mainland in order to take a ferry from there to Con Dao. It does take approximately 5 hours give or take but I would prefer this as it gives you time relax on route which for myself and I hope most people need desperately. The key word I will use for this is RELAX! In my eyes when your travelling why does one need to always take the quicker option? Isn’t this all about the journey?

Guests travelling by ferry boat will end up docking at Ben Dam Harbor which is also placed roughly 13km from the town. You can ask the hotel/resort to arrange a pick up for you at a general cost of 40k VND (which is $1.73 USD) per person. In addition you could always take a bike taxi or regular taxi with the prices around the same. You should only expect to pay 30-40k VND for this service to get to town from either the airport or the ferry.

GET AROUND ISLAND

Now for the adventurous type if you crazy a motorbike experience and want to try what I call modern Viet life you can hire a bike to travel around the island (this is my choice) at a cost of 100-120k VND ($4.33 USD - $5.20 USD) per day. Most places where you will stay have options to do this for you.

WHY HAVE I CALLED THIS A HIDDEN ISLAND ?

It seems like a bold claim to make I know. This is obviously my personal opinion and people may have a different one and I am all for that. The truth remains though Con Dao has been voted one of the secret and wild islands to visit by Travel and Leisure magazine. This place not only has Nature and some amazing views and photo opportunities (I know I take a lot of pictures) but it has a story to tell and frankly it is a powerful one at that. There was a prisonlocated on this island that housed a lot of people there over the course of history and without going into too much detail is especially important to our culture to remember this. I invite anyone reading this to link under and learn if you wish to.

Here you can visit the grave if Vo Thi Sau the teenage guerilla fighter and national hero.

When I was growing up, I was hurt when I was hearing about these events that took place. I know no one can change the past but with those memories I am proud and will always pay my respects and be grateful knowing that humanity can overcome these things. I would personally like to say thank you for what my country has become and forever will be VIETNAM.

 NATURAL BEAUTIFUL BEACH NATURE

Now another plus for this island (as I’m writing this I remembering the good times I had and now planning to go back) is the stunning beaches. Everybody can say they have the most beautiful beaches and yes they are right its sand and water what can go wrong with that combination? But I am here to tell you take that crystal water take that golden sand and add it with tropical and I mean tropical weather! You know what I might just move there now I convinced myself. The beaches I would recommend seeing the spectacular Sunset and Sunrises are Bai Nhat and Bai Dam Trau. I can assure you its breathtaking.

SCUBA DIVING

There are many things you can do really the options are there. Fancy abit of scuba diving? Why not Con Dao has different sub islands such as: Hon Bay Canh, Hon Tai, Hon Tre, Hon Egg, Hon Trac or Hon Cau and with these islands (well mini-islands) they have an abundance of coral reefs with the highest density so it would be rude not to explore right? If you wish to Scuba dive there are businesses, there can teach you too if you are new most hotels there will be able to guide you in the right direction.

Oh and one more thing all im going to say is SEA TURTLES!!! Enough said.
