A little hike was in order for the weekend we needed to get amongst nature and waterfalls so we decided to take a drive to Dorrigo National Park which is just over a 3 hour drive from our town Byron Bay. Dorrigo National Park is listed as a World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest with many breathtaking waterfalls.
Once we reached Dorrigo National Park we decided to take the trail walk through the lush rainforest towards Crystal Shower Falls which is about a 3.5 km distance at a steady pace it could take you up to 2 hours to get to base of Crystal Shower Falls.
Walking down towards the Crystal Shower Falls is very intriguing because you can actually walk behind the waterfalls itself along the way listing to the sounds of the waterfalls and the calls of the birds like fruit doves and looking up at lush rainforest towers is just superb.
Once you are near the bottom there is a suspension bridge that will lead you in behind the waterfall into a rocky cavern and it's here where you will see this beautiful natural waterfall with a great swimming hole, which is very accessible providing you are good on your feet. Many steps and some uneven ground to climb down and back up but it is worthwhile to see these astounding views of these waterfalls gashing down from the valleys of the lush rainforest.
Dorrigo National Park stretches for 185 kilometers from the coast near Urunga, to Armidale in the west , it has a abundance of natural beauty and many impressive waterfalls and offers countless natural hiking trails. There are also a picnic grounds here if you decide to bring a few steaks and sausages.
Heading back up we took the trail heading towards Red Cedar Falls this is a more challenging trail to hike as it almost all entirely uphill but you get to see the more thick of the rainforest and huge enormous red cedar trees that are hundreds of years old and the smell of the rainforest is just overwhelming with freshness.
The amazing thing that i learned about some of these swimming holes at Danger Falls is they are volcanic craters with a deep tube that plunges to un-seeable depths you would want to be a good swimmer.
The Dangar Falls are definitely beautiful and worth checking out if ever in the area. The falls are such a treat to see and the viewing platform is a great spot for panorama views to see the falls and take photos. Was definitely worth the 3 hour drive.
