#TravelThursday - Galibi, Suriname

Ready to go on another trip?!

Welcome to another edition of #TravelThursday, in which I highlight a country or place I’ve been to in my travels. It’s a challenge for us as travel lovers, a lot of us have to stay put…. but at least we have the pictures and the memories! Right?

Welcome to Galibi, Suriname!

On the north eastern tip of Suriname there is a native American village…. It’s a simple village where people live in peace. No not in teepees or anything like that, there are houses! There are schools, a place to practice religion, and fishing camps…. Oh and you’ll see lots of boats.

You see to get to #Galibi you have to go by boat, travel down the Marowijne River for about an 40m to an hour! And before that, if you’re leaving from Paramaribo (the capital) there is a 3-4 hour drive to get to Albina.
Albina is a popular place because that where you can cross the river to France. I know you’re confused but technically it’s France but in this case the country if call French Guyana .
That a story in itself because there is such frequent traffic that there are French speaking people on the Surinamese side and if you go into shops the prices are both in SRD (Surinaamse Dollar) and Euro.

But back to Galibi!

Once you hit Albina you will have to leave your car somewhere. Most of the time depending on who organized your trip, you will have a safe parking spot for however many days your gone. Once you get in the boat you travel right by the coast (or both coast) towards the North.

Galibi

Galibi looks like a beach paradise without the ocean . Hahha that’s a weird way of describing it but that’s the first thing you’ll notice. The water in the Marowijne River is brown, because of the mud/sand banks at the mouth of the river. It’s still safe to swim but it’s not like anything in the Caribbean.
When you get there you’ll see a couple of miles of beach and lots of palm trees….

After you leave the beach there is this white Savana sand. This your new ground for the next few days! Tell your calves!

Galibi is very much one with nature, you’ll see lots of birds around and maybe even a monkey or two 

The Trips!
One thing that makes Galibi an interesting place to visit is the different trips you can take from there.
You can cross the river and go the French Guyana, both countries are famous for being a nesting area for Giant Turtles. If you’re lucky you can see them laying and burying their eggs (I’ve seen this when I was younger).
You can also go towards the ocean to one of the sandbanks! Some of them disappear with high tide while others form little islands. You will definitely need an expert to take you because there are so many possibilities to get your boat stuck out there.

Walking in a sand bank!

Pro tip!
If you get up before sunrise you can catch the sunrise! It’s interesting view as the sun comes up over the ocean, river and another country!
