Frigates, Ferries & Submarines @ Cacilhas, Lisbon

Lisbon is one of my favourite cities, it's beautiful, with plenty to explore. Fantastic architecture, lovely parks, bars, restaurants, galleries, something for everyone. It's good to explore a little further afield sometimes and see what else is out there, and sometimes you don't need to go very far indeed...

Cacilhas is part of the metropolitan area of Lisbon, but finds itself on the opposite bank of the river Tagus. It's a short trip across the river via the ferry, which leaves from the Cais do Sodré railway station.

It's a little exciting having to get a ferry across the river, it gives you a wonderful view of Lisbon as you cross, with parts of Lisbon looking a little like Venice, especially with cruise ships in the backdrop too! It's also good to see the "25 de Abril" bridge from a different angle too.

Once you're on the other side it's a little more Portuguese than Lisbon, it's a place where people live and work, and commute to Lisbon, it's not a big area for tourists. It does have a history of ship building, although this isn't currently operational.

It does however have a submarine in a dry dock which they're hopefully going to hopen as a tourist attraction, as well as "Dom Fernando II e Glória", a 19th Century frigate, which although was destroyed by fire, has been restored to its original condition.

So here's a few pictures of Cacilhas, hope you enjoy this slightly alternative view of lisbon, complete with some local artwork...
