Dogs Bay & Galway

Out of all of the beaches I've ever had the pleasure to visit, my favourite has to be Dog's Bay, on the edge of Galway, on the west coast of Ireland. It might not be the warmest part of the world, on the edge of the north Atlantic Ocean, but it feels like you're in paradise.

It's formed by a sand spit and tombolo (that's a narrow strip of land), and has two lovely beaches either side, called Dog's Bay, and Gurteen Bay. It's away from any major town, so is pretty quiet at the busiest of time, so just perfect!

We wad the pleasure of going to a friends wedding in Donegal, and having family in Kerry, decided to drive along the west coast, taking in a few days in Galway along the way.

We stayed in a little house near to Doonreaghan, a few miles from the village of Roundstone, so was in a good place to enjoy this remote area of Ireland, with lots of little outcrops of land to explore, and a peaceful absence of the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

So if you want to get away from people, have an amazing beach and coastline, in the shadow of the Connemara Mountains, then it's the place to head for. And the Guinness pretty good too!
