Caye Caulker. Belize .

Caye Caulker, sitting in the Caribbean 20 miles and a short ferry ride from Belize City it is the second largest of the Belizean Cayes. The island beckons us visitors for a casual tropical break.

Arriving here early afternoon for a couple of nights, in my case, doing fuck all. Most of my fellow travellers were happy go off snorkelling, bird watching and other such stuff, like boat trips or canoeing off shore, that appeals not to me.

The island need to invest in some jet skis or para-gliders something to get the adrenaline going. I will do sedate stuff when I get old.

The island is about 4 miles long, but the town itself is only about a mile long. Basically one long drag touristic drag with adjoining non descript avenues.

Cars, are blissfully absent, the closet you get are golf buggies motoring up and down the dusty streets, full of tourist shops and restaurants, like I say the island doesn’t have all that much to do.

A pretty impressive fire truck though.

I guess it is time to wander

Up north to "The Split"

Tourism only started to trickle through in the 1960’s, gradually increasing especially when in 1992 the new airstrip was built at the outskirts of town. I saw it on further adventures, the openeing snap of this upload is its welcoming sign. basically a strip of concrete in a field.

Though my wanderings took in the sea and the sand and the sun there were not many people lazing around topping up their tans.

So that didn't take long, time to wander back

So called as there is a channel that divides the island in two, the popular bit where we are and the as yet undeveloped north bit.

Meet the locals

Little bits of artwork dotted here and there, nothing special.
