In the Czech Republic, there's a tad simplified view of Spain. Often, it's perceived merely as the endless Costa Brava, teeming with tourists, or perhaps as sun-dried semi-deserts in the mainland. But Spain is a mosaic of environments, more varied than one might think, including several mountain ranges. One such range is the Sierra de Guadarrama, which is within driving distance from Madrid. Though one could technically bike there from the capital, I'd advise against it; the cycle path runs uncomfortably close to the highway, almost as if it was constructed over its former lane.
When the Madrileños escape the city and seek refuge from the summer heat, the Sierra de Guadarrama, with the highest peak soaring to over 2,400 meters above sea level, is always a choice. The temperatures in October are quite bearable, yet my girlfriend and I aimed to ascend La Maliciosa, 'The Malicious One', standing tall at 2,227 meters anyways.
Myslím, že český pohled na Španělsko je dost zkreslený. Vnímáme ho hlavně jako nekonečnou Costa Bravu plnou turistů, a možná jako pár sluncem vysušených plání ve vnitrozemí. Španělsko je přitom mnohem členitější a zajímavější než Česko, pokud jde o přírodní podmínky. Má i několik pohoří, se kterými se ty česká co do výšky nedají srovnávat. Třeba Sierra de Guadarrama je hodinku autem od Madridu. Dojedete tam i na kole, ale cyklostezka vede hned vedle dálnice, a chvílemi to vypadá, jako by od dálnice jen oddělili odstavný pruh, aby měli cyklisté kudy jet. Takže cyklovýlet rozhodně nedoporučuju.
Každopádně když se Madrileños chtějí v létě ochladit, Sierra de Guadarrama, jehož nejvyšší bod je více než 2 400 metrů nad mořem, se vždycky nabízí. Teď v říjnu je tu snesitelně, ale do hor jsme si vyrazili i tak. Na La Maliciosu, Zlomyslnou horu. Její vrchol je 2 227 metrů nad mořem.
Our starting point was Navacerrada, a common pueblo at the base of La Maliciosa. Initially, we intended to park our car a tad further up, but due to a race that was just taking place, the usual parking was unavailable. So we found ourselves trekking an additional three kilometers each way. Speaking about that, our journey stretched close to 25 km over some challenging terrains. The initial part of our hike led us through grazing land. Interestingly, no barriers or fences separate the pastures from the road, so every once in a while, cows make their crossings.
Vyrazili jsme z Navacerrady, klasického puebla na úpatí Zlomyslné. Původně jsme chtěli zaparkovat asi o tři kilometry výš, ale zrovna se tu konal běžecký závod, který by jistě zaujal @bodie7, takže parkoviště nebylo dostupné. A tak jsme k původní trase museli přidat tři kilometry tam a zpátky, naštěstí jednoduchým terénem. Celkem jsme ušli asi 25 kilometrů, ten zbytek už byl ale podstatně náročnější. Trasa, kterou bychom bychom jinak urazili autem, vedla mezi pastvinami s dobytkem. Cesta od nich nebyla oddělená plotem ani jinou bariérou, a tak si ji tu krávy čas od času přecházejí tam a zpátky.
Sadly, forest fires are a significant problem in Spain, and for that matter, throughout the entire Mediterranean region. No wonder we came across one of the many firefighter bases stationed in the Spanish mountains.
Lesní požáry jsou ve Španělsku bohužel docela časté, jako ostatně v celém Středozemí. U Navacerrady je velká základna hasičů, podobných je ve španělských horách plno.
At the end of the paved road, there used to be a sanatorium for people suffering from tuberculosis built in the 1940s. In the 1990s, the building briefly served as a psychiatric hospital, but now it is about to be taken down for good.
Na konci zpevněné cesty bývalo sanatorium pro pacienty s tuberkulózou postavené ve čtyřicátých letech. V devadesátých letech budova chvilku sloužila jako psychiatrická nemocnice, ale teď už ji čeká jen demolice.
The Sierra de Guadarrama is a significant water source for the entire Community of Madrid. Throughout our hike, we encountered several springs and climbed up mainly by the Río Navacerrada stream. Two water reservoirs control its flow and offer splendid views of the peaks from which their waters originate.
Ze Sierra de Guadarrama je většina pitné vody v regionu Comunidad de Madrid. Během naší túry jsme potkávali jeden pramen za druhým a větší část cesty šli proti proudu Río Navacerrada, do které se vlévají. Její hladina je regulována dvěma nádržemi, ze kterých je hezký výhled na hory, odkud voda v nich přitekla.
Contrary to the general (Czech) opinion on Spain, the woods around are abundant, given the mountains' rich water resources. One could easily feel like somewhere in Central Europe.
Běžné české představě Španělska navzdory, lesy v horách se zelenají i teď v říjnu, protože je tu dost vody a příjemné klima. Člověk by se klidně mohl cítit jako kdesi ve střední Evropě.

Na úvod jsem zmínil běžecký závod. A tady je kousek jeho trati. Kdybych tu zkoušel běžet, do minuty bych si zvrtnul kotník a zlámal snad všechny kosti v těle. Klobouk dolů před všemi běžci.
At some of the springs, you can refill your bottle. Even though the water is non-treated, everybody drinks it. It was icy-cold and felt refreshing.
U některých pramenů si můžete doplnit vodu, což je super. I když její kvalitu nikdo nesleduje, všichni ji pijí. Je ledově studená a osvěžující.
At about 1,700 meters of altitude, you eventually leave the forest zone and its shade. I wouldn’t go any further in the summer. Yet the temperature was not unbearable yesterday, so we continued to Collado del Piornal, a saddle between Bola del Mundo and La Maliciosa. Even at almost 2,000 meters, we could still follow one of the streams.
Někde kolem 1700 metrů nad mořem končí les, a také příjemný stín, ve kterém se hezky jde. V létě bych dál nešel, ale včera nebylo žádné nesnesitelné vedro, a tak jsme pokračovali do Collado del Piornal, sedla mezi horami Bola del Mundo a La Maliciosa. I v bezmála 2 000 metrech jsme stále stoupali podél jednoho z potůčků.

The La Maliciosa peak is about 150 meters above Collado del Piornal, but there are no more streams on the way, so the last part of the hike looks way more hostile. The vegetation might be sparse, but the mountain goats still relish it. Can you spot them in any of the photos?
Vrchol Zlomyslné hory je ještě o 150 metrů výš, ale v posledním úseku cesty už nejsou žádné prameny, a tak vypadá o poznání méně pohostinně. Vegetace je tu řídká, ale horské kozy si na ní i tak pochutnávají. Všimnete si jich na některé z fotek?
