Cruising to Tromso, Norway and the Northern Lights

Our next port of call on our Norwegian cruise was Tromso in Norway. We decided to spend an hour walking around the town and to do a bit of Christmas shopping. It was looking very festive with a light sprinkling of snow and its Christmas lights. They seem to know how to grit the roads properly over here. I only saw one person fall and for a change it wasn’t me!

We walked past the lovely Tromso Cathedral, which is the only cathedral in Norway that is made of wood.

If you look closely, the pigeons were all perched on the back of the Christmas reindeer. The light bulbs were keeping them warm!

We then decided to take the Fjellheisen Cable Car to the top of the Fløyfjellet Mountain. The two cable cars were called Seal and Polar Bear. Each cable car held 28 passengers. I really don't like heights but funnily enough, I found myself next to a chap from Liverpool who told me he was shitting himself as he didn't like heights either. He made me laugh, so the four minutes it took to get to the top went quickly. Wonderful views of Tromsø down below and the snow capped mountains.

There was also a restaurant at the top, where we had a welcome cup of chocolate and chocolate cake. After looking at the scenery we decided to make our way back down. Unfortunately, we had to wait an hour as one of the cable cars had broken down. Not great to hear when you don't like heights. We could have walked down the 400 plus steps but decided to wait until the cable car was fixed. Well, wouldn’t you??

After we got back to the cruise ship, we saw the Northern Lights. It was a fitting end to an enjoyable day!
