Flumserberg in winter

We come to Flumserberg often as it's not only close to our home but it offers stunning views of surrounding mountains and has many hiking trails to choose from as well.

There are many tourists in summer as there are great trails for families with kids but you can still find spots where you don't meet many people - the deeper in the mountains you go, the less people you meet. When you're on a long and more difficult hiking trail you usually only come across a few fellow hikers sharing the same passion.

When we go to the mountains in winter we need to make sure that there are prepared trails for walking as snow shoes are very uncomfortable for my hip. Flumserberg has several trails that you can choose from and they are very well maintained.

Some weeks ago, we were both tired from a stressful working week and the weather was nice, so we decided to go for a relaxing walk. We chose a trail that was long but not that difficult or so it seemed. Walking in the snow is not easy, so even an easy trail might be quite tough in the end. We started at the foot of the mountain and slowly went up to enjoy this view.

At the beginning there were so many people but it slowly became less and less, as they stayed at lower levels because they mainly came for sledging, not hiking. At that time all the ski resorts were closed, so people focused on other winter activities. I must admit that I haven't seen so many people snow walking before.

We were lucky with the weather, and it was a perfect time to be outside. It was not too cold, not that windy, the sun was shining from time to time, it was also snowing for a while, so we enjoyed a bit of everything that day.

In total we walked around 10 km with around 100 floors of elevation gain - not too shabby!

Most of the time we were in the forest with trees covered in snow...

Somewhere around this place my husband decided that it was funny to run down the hill. Don't ask me why though. At the end, it was not so much running than rolling down the hill. I have a funny video but he strictly forbade me to share it here. I can only tell you that there were a couple of kids having a lot of fun watching him.

This scenery reminded me of old Christmas fairy tales...

It looks like that tree in the middle is ruling over its fellow trees in the forest - so majestic, standing there on its own.

On the other side of the lake (in the back) are Churfisten which we visited this winter too. We chose the right side that day as their peaks were hidden behind the clouds, so we probably wouldn't have seen much if we were on the other side of the valley.

I must admit that this photo is a mystery to me. I was only with my husband and I don't remember that there would be somebody else standing with us, but on this photos there are three shadows! I think that the right one is me, the left one is my husband and the one in the middle will remain a mystery!

Sun is showing up again! This view was worth that hike...

We found a bench here and enjoyed our snacks from home. We were happy that we had hot tea with us too! It was soothing to hold a warm cup in ice cold hands.

From here we continued a bit further.. we didn't want to turn around as it was a glorious day but we were planning to buy a cup of mulled wine back down in the valley which was a motivation strong enough for us to return.

Going right through the snow here was too tempting but it was just too beautiful without any trails so we didn't do it.

10.jpg

Churfisten stayed partly hidden on the way back as well...

We almost got them!

12.jpg

You cannot have everything what you want, so we accepted that they just didn't want us to see them that day.

The mulled wine was warm and delicious, and it was a perfect finish to our day in the mountains.

Thank you for reading!

Cheers!
