Emerald Lake - Yoho National Park

Located at the heart of Yoho National Park, in the Rocky Mountains, Emerald lake truly is a gem. It's a less popular than nearby Lake Louise but just as stunning in its own unique way. It's about a two hour and fifteen minute drive from Calgary but well worth it.

The scenery was so spectacular around the lake we just went for a walk about the lake and spend the majority of the time admiring the view.

It was a hot day, the same day we went to nearby Takakkaw Falls. The weather didn't say let's go for a long hike, so we went for a leisurely stroll.

While there is an access road to the lake and a small resort, the area is about as pristine as it gets. You are close to the continental divide here located just across the border from Alberta in British Columbia, Canada.

Common Merganser ducks enjoy the frigid waters of this glacial lake. The colour comes from how the water reflects the light, it's a clear lake and you can see quite deep.

Plenty of folks enjoy canoeing on this lake. At $90/hr, I'd rather bring my own watercraft. Needless to say, there was quite the line up to enjoy a paddle and a once in a lifetime experience.

Trails go all around the lake and they are essentially free if you have a Parks Canada pass. The lake is calm so stand up paddle boards are another popular option.

The lodge located nearby the lake is a place we will definitely stay one day. In the fall it is fairly reasonable and just as beautiful if you don't mind cozying up near a fire at night. On this hot early September Day, when you think the lake would be warm towards the summer only the brave would dare to take a dip.

Those emerald greens and shades of aquamarine make it such a tempting place to take a dip. Many of the ponds and lakes in the area have a similar colour. We will return and it's highly recommended that anyone who visits Banff or Lake Louise drives the extra hour to see Emerald Lake.
