Durres - Basilica of Saint Michael / Erzengel-Michael-Basilika

Last week, I showed some interesting remains of Durres' medieval past. By happenstance, on the same day that I wrote this, I found another part of that distant past. Unlike the stuff I wrote about last time, though, this find was not entirely coincidental.	Letzte Woche zeigte ich einige interessante Reste des mittelalterlichen Durres. Wie der Zufall es will, fand ich am gleichen Tag, als ich dies schrieb, ein weiteres Stück aus dieser Zeit. Anders als das, worüber ich beim letzten Mal schrieb, ist dieser Fund aber nicht komplett zufällig.

I had looked at Google's satellite maps of Durres to find some interesting structures in the ground. & indeed I found something:	Ich hatte auf Googles Satellitenbildern von Durres nach interessanten Strukturen im Boden gesucht, & tatsächlich etwas gefunden:

I found no other information, nothing at all. But it looked interesting & I thought that I might find some coins or something in the ground, if no one ever dug there. So, I took a walk to get there & see what it is. At the site itself, there was a fence around it, but the gate was open. Since no one (literally no one) was there to stop me, I entered.	Konnte nichts weiter dazu finden, gar nichts. Aber es sah interessant aus & ich dachte, daß ich vielleicht auf Münzen o.ä. im Grund stoßen könnte, falls dort vorher niemand gegraben hätte. Also latschte ich mal hin, um zu sehen, was es war. Dort angekommen, fand ich das Gelände eingezäunt, aber mit offenem Tor. Da niemand vor Ort war, ging ich einfach mal rein.

Which is where I found the only piece of information which helped me to figure out what it was. At a transformer station inside was this sign, "Bazilika" being the obvious hint. Googling for a basilica in Durres later brought up information about the Basilica of Saint Michael right away.	Wo ich dann die einzigen Infos fand, die mir halfen, herauszufinden, worum es sich handelte. An einer Trafostation im Innern hing dieses Schild, mit "Bazilika" als offensichtlichem Hinweis. Als ich später 'Basilika in Durres' googelte, kam die Erzengel-Michael-Basilika als erstes Ergebnis.

Looking in from the gate, the ruins don't look like much. To get there, coming from the beach, you have to cross the freeway SH85, which is not that easy for a pedestrian. There are not a lot of points to cross, the closest to the ruins is this flimsy, metal foot bridge. If you come from the centre of Durres, it's probably easiest to take a taxi. Shouldn't cost more than 800 Lek (~ 7€).	Vom Eingang her betrachtet, sehen die Ruinen nach nicht viel aus. Um vom Strand dorthin zu kommen, muß man die Schnellstraße SH85 überqueren, was für Fußgänger nicht allzu leicht ist. Die einzige Möglichkeit in der Nähe der Ruinen ist diese klapprige Metallbrücke. Wenn man vom Stadtzentrum kommt, ist es wohl am einfachsten, ein Taxi zu nehmen. Sollte nicht mehr als 800 Lek (~ 7€) kosten.

Getting closer, the ruins look way more interesting. Acc. to Wikipedia, the basilica was around 60m long & up to 30m wide. It was probably built at the beginning of the 6th century AD, under Byzantine emperor Anastasius I Dicorus (491–518) & dedicated to Archangel Michael.	Aus der Nähe betrachtet sehen die Ruinen deutlich interessanter aus. Laut Wikipedia war die Basilika 60m lang & bis zu 30m breit. Sie wurde vermutlich Anfang des 6. Jh. n.Chr. unter dem byzantinischen Kaiser Anastasius I Dicorus (491-518) gebaut & dem Erzengel Michael geweiht.

Little signs of spring. The church was destroyed by the Norman army of Robert Guiscard, probably around 1081. It was discovered again in 1974 & partially excavated until 1983.	Kleines Frühlingserwachen. Die Kirche wurde wohl um 1081 von der Normannenarmee von Robert Guiscard zerstört. Erst 1974 wurde sie wiederentdeckt & bis 1983 teilweise ausgegraben.

Above you see the West side of the basilica. This was the entrance area, probably with 4 doors or gates, atrium & narthex.	Oben sieht man die Westseite der Basilika. Dies war der Eingangsbereich, wahrscheinlich mit 4 Türen oder Toren, Atrium & Narthex.

The remains of a multi-coloured mosaic, covered by gravel to preserve it. The mosaic sits on top of a burial chamber in which the remains of one man & one woman were found.	Die Reste eines vielfarbigen Mosaiks, von Schotter bedeckt, um es zu erhalten. Das Mosaik befindet sich über einer Grabkammer, in der man die Überreste eines Mannes & einer Frau fand.

Probably the entrance to said burial chamber (with the usual garbage thrown in). Because I wasn't sure whether I was even allowed on site, I didn't venture into the underground chamber. If I go there again, I might try, though.	Vermutlich der Eingang zur erwähnten Grabkammer (mit dem üblichen Müll). Da ich nicht sicher war, ob ich das Grundstück überhaupt betreten durfte, wagte ich mich lieber nicht in den Untergrund. Sollte ich nochmal hingehen, werde ich es nachholen.

Beside the main apse, there was a smaller one on each side. But only the one on the north side is easily visible.	Auf jeder Seite der Hauptapsis gab es je eine kleinere Apsis. Aber nur die auf der Nordseite ist klar erkennbar.

The street to the east of the church is going uphill. Therefore you can have a nice overview from there. This is the place from where I took the title photo, with the northern apse in the foreground.	Die Straße östlich der Kirche führt bergauf. Daher hat man von dort einen guten Überblick. Von hier aus nahm ich das Titelbild auf, mit der nördlichen Apsis im Vordergrund.

Sadly, there is not much money in Albania to spend on archaeology & preservation of the past. So, although this site is a declared cultural monument of Albania, not much is done about it. The good thing is that you can visit it for free, though. If you're interested in history & archaeology, it's definitely worth it. & with that I'll leave you for today, now just a few more pics:

Leider gibt es in Albanien nicht genug Geld, um Archäologie & Vergangenheitsbewahrung zu finanzieren. Daher wird auch hier nicht viel getan, obwohl die Ruinen als kulturelles Erbgut Albaniens gelten. Das Gute daran ist, daß man sie kostenlos ansehen kann. Für diejenigen, die sich für Archäologie & Geschichte interessieren, sind sie definitiv einen Besuch wert. & das soll's für heute gewesen sein, jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder:
