Dali - Old Town - part 2 / Altstadt - Teil 2

In my last post, you saw our Dali trip up to the point we visited the Three Pagodas. Today, we're mostly just walking southwards from the Three Pagodas. Which can be easily done, because the pagodas are just a few hundred metres from the old town.	In meinem letzten Beitrag zeigte ich unseren Besuch in Dali bis zu den Drei Pagoden. Heute spazieren wir von den Drei Pagoden aus südwärts durch die Altstadt. Was kein großer Umstand ist, da die Pagoden nur ein paar hundert Meter von der Altstadt entfernt sind.

Two or three hundred metres south of the pagodas, you enter the old town through the north gate, seen below. In 2008 it didn't look that interesting, essentially just a pavilion on a darn thick wall. From what I have seen the area around changed a bit since then.	Zwei- bis dreihundert Meter südlich der Pagoden kommt man durch das unten zu sehende Nordtor in die Altstadt. 2008 sah es nicht übermäßig interessant aus, einfach nur ein Pavillon auf einer verdammt dicken Mauer. Die Umgebung hat sich seitdem aber anscheinend etwas verändert.

Anyway, I smell something fishy here. When you look at a picture of the early 20th century, showing a city gate of Dali (don't know which one), it looks quite different:	Das Tor sieht sowieso verdächtig neu aus. Wenn man sich das Bild eines Stadttors von Dali (weiß leider nicht, welches) aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert ansieht, sind deutliche Unterschiede erkennbar:

The above shows the old gate through which allegedly Marco Polo came on his travels. I am rather annoyed by these pseudo-reconstructions you find everywhere in China. Speaking of which, here is the Wuhua Tower (五华楼, Wǔ huá lóu, allegedly a guest house of a local king 1200 years ago) in the centre of the old town:	Oben sieht man das alte Stadttor, das angeblich Marco Polo auf einer seiner Reisen durchschritt. Mich nerven diese angeblichen Rekonstruktionen, die man überall in China findet, etwas. Wo gerade die Rede von Rekonstruktionen ist, hier ist der Wuhua-Turm (五华楼, Wǔ huá lóu, angeblich das Gästehaus eines lokalen Königs vor 1200 Jahren) im Zentrum der Altstadt:

Looks nice, but again a reconstruction: built in 1998. The original had been built during the Tang Dynasty, but probably also looked very different.	Sieht gut aus, ist aber auch nur eine Rekonstruktion: gebaut 1998. Das Original stammt aus der Zeit der Tangdynastie, sah aber wohl auch deutlich anders aus.

There are a number of smaller buildings built in more or less traditional style. You never know how old they really are, but they are nice to look at. Many are souvenir shops nowadays, but the situation in Dali is not as bad as in Lijiang (which will be my next China travel post). At least in 2008, in Dali you could walk around town quite relaxed without people everywhere trying to sell you something.

Es gibt dort eine Anzahl kleinerer Gebäude im mehr oder weniger traditionellen Stil. Man weiß natürlich nie, wie alt sie wirklich sind. Sind aber nett anzusehen. Viele davon behausen Souvenirläden, aber die Situation in Dali ist nicht so extrem wie in Lijiang (worum es in meinem nächsten Chinareisebeitrag geht). Zumindest konnte man 2008 noch recht entspannt durch Dali spazieren, ohne daß überall versucht wurde, einem etwas anzudrehen.

Above, you see the south gate of Dali. In 2008 it was the centre of tourist activity. Understandable, because it looks better (because of the greenery) & more authentic than the north gate. But the building on top of the wall is almost an exact copy of the one on the north gate, hence it's probably also just a reconstruction. (Addendum: After I finished writing, I found out that the city gates were rebuilt in the 1980's.) Makes for nice pictures, anyway.

Oben sieht man das Südtor Dalis. 2008 war dies das Zentrum touristischer Aktivität. Verständlich, da es besser (wegen des Grünzeugs) & etwas authentischer aussieht als das Nordtor. Das Gebäude über dem Tor ist eine beinahe exakte Kopie desjenigen auf dem Nordtor, also wahrscheinlich auch eine Rekonstruktion. (Addendum: Nachdem der Artikel schon fertig war, fand ich heraus, daß die Stadttore wohl in den 80ern gebaut wurden.) Trotzdem gut für Bilder.

Which is why there are always girls (never boys, strangely) around, dressed in traditional Bai costumes. They are waiting for tourists who pay them to have taken pictures with them.	Weshalb dort auch immer Mädels (seltsamerweise keine Jungs) in traditionellen Bai-Trachten sitzen, die auf Touristen lauern, die für Bilder mit ihnen bezahlen sollen.

It's a good idea to enter the south gate, because for one, inside is a small Buddhist temple. But, most of all, you have a nice view over the old town. If the weather is good, you can take some nice pictures, even of the Three Pagodas.	Man sollte auch mal ins Südtor steigen, weil es einerseits einen kleinen buddhistischen Tempel enthält. Andererseits hat man v.a. einen schönen Blick über die Altstadt. Wenn das Wetter gut ist, kann man nette Bilder machen, sogar von den Drei Pagoden.

Above, the Three Pagodas are to the very left, the Wuhua Tower to the right. As you can see, there are lots of small alleyways. If you have time & if you are not accompanied by a rather impatient girlfriend, it's probably a good idea to just walk around for a few hours.	Oben sieht man die Drei Pagoden ganz links, den Wuhua-Turm rechts. Wie man auch sieht, gibt es viele kleine Gassen. Wer Zeit hat & nicht von einer ungeduldigen Freundin begleitet wird, sollte einfach mal ein paar Stunden durch die Gegend latschen.

But, as you can also see, most of the buildings in the area are, though small, far from old or traditional in style. Below, in the distance, lies the university of Dali, behind a rather normal rural Chinese town. But that is also interesting, because wandering around there shows you the real life in China, beyond the touristy 'ancient' towns or the 'ultra-modern' metropolises.

Wie man aber auch erkennt, sind die meisten Häuser zwar klein, aber keineswegs alt oder traditionell gehalten. Unten sieht man in der Ferne die Uni von Dali hinter einer recht normalen, ländlichen, chinesischen Kleinstadt. Gerade das ist aber auch interessant, da man dort bei Spaziergängen das echte Leben in China sieht, außerhalb der touristischen 'Altstädte' oder 'ultramodernen' Millionenstädte.

That Dali in 2008 was not yet overrun by tourists can be seen in the next photo. People were actually living their normal lives there. They even used the city wall to grow some vegetables:	Daß Dali 2008 noch nicht von Touristen überlaufen war, sieht man auf dem nächsten Bild. Man lebte dort noch das übliche Alltagsleben. Sogar die Stadtmauer wurde genutzt, um Gemüse anzubauen:

Don't know whether they still do this nowadays, but I have my doubts. Anyway, for what I have read, although Dali is now although a tourist attraction for Chinese, it still is not as bad as in Lijiang's old town, where pretty much every building is a souvenir shop.	Weiß nicht, ob es das heute noch gibt, aber bezweifle es. Dali ist heutzutage sowieso auch für Chinesen eine Touristenattraktion, wenn es auch noch nicht so schlimm ist wie in Lijiangs Altstadt, wo so ziemlich jedes Haus ein Souvenirshop ist.

More girls waiting for tourists. Although, sometimes they don't only wait. Just when I was preparing to take some photos of my then-girlfriend in front of the gate, one of the girls approached her to offer taking pics with her. But obviously, she was not quite happy being included without pay. Then she shouldn't photobomb, though:	Mehr Mädels, die auf Touristen warten. Manchmal warten sie aber nicht nur. Gerade, als ich meine Freundin vor dem Südtor fotografieren wollte, kam eines dieser Mädchen, um anzubieten, sich mit ihr abbilden zu lassen. War offensichtlich nicht gerade glücklich, daß ich einfach so abdrückte, ohne Bezahlung. Dann sollte sie sich halt nicht ins Bild drängen.

For some reason, we changed hotels inside Dali that day. Don't remember why, perhaps price or location. The new room itself was OK, a normal medium range hotel.	Aus irgendeinem Grund wechselten wir an dem Tag noch das Hotel. Keine Ahnung, warum, vielleicht Preis oder Lage. Das neue Zimmer war OK, normale Mittelklasse.

The bathroom shows, though, that it was obviously not the best of the medium standard hotels:	Das Badezimmer zeigt allerdings, daß es wohl kein sehr gutes Mittelklassehotel war:

The outside of the hotel was very nice, one of the traditional courtyard buildings. This kind of hotel was mostly attractive for backpackers, which back in 2008 formed a large part of the tourist crowd in Dali.	Von außen war das Hotel sehr hübsch, ein traditionelles Hofhaus. Diese Art Hotel war v.a. bei Rucksacktouristen beliebt, die 2008 einen Großteil der Touristen in Dali stellten.

There is more to Dali than I showed. If you want to see everything, you may need up to a week there, not just 2-3 days as we had. Some last tips: Don't take a taxi, if you can avoid it. There is a high probability that the drivers will rip you off. Same goes for pretty much all the small shops. Only buy stuff of which you know the approximate price or where the price is clearly visible. Further information can be found in some links provided at the very end of this post. Es gibt viel mehr in Dali, als ich zeigen konnte. Wer alles sehen will, sollte bis zu einer Woche einplanen, nicht nur 2-3 Tage, die wir hatten. Einige letzte Tips: Man nehme kein Taxi, da der Fahrer höchstwahrscheinlich abzockt. Das Gleiche gilt für so ziemlich alle kleineren Läden. Kauft nur Zeug, dessen Preis ungefähr bekannt ist oder deutlich gekennzeichnet ist. Weitere Infos (auf Englisch) finden sich in einigen Links ganz am Ende. Jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder:
