Azores - Nordeste, the south and our Hoel

It´s been a while since my first post about our trip to the amazingly beautiful Azores Islands.

Today I´m going to show you a little bit more since I still have a lot to tell about Sao Miguel one of the Azores Islands. As I said in my previous post, our first accommodation wasn´t as expected and we had to leave it in the morning due to mold smell and as you can see in one of the photos the neighbourhood wasn´t as inviting as we thought as well. Luckily we were able to check into our Hotel 2 days earlier as planned.

But before we checked in we explored the east of the island including one of the most beautiful parts, Nordeste.

During our whole stay we were always a bit scared because of the weather forecast as it always said rainy. So we took the chance on the first morning and went straight to Nordeste in the east of the island as the webcam photos looked bright and sunny. Leaving our first accommodation behind us wasn´t hard since we really did not like it much. We did not care about the payment of the 2 nights but we did get our money back in the end. What do you think about the neighbourhood? Does not look really nice right?

Anyway, we were looking forward to Nordeste and our Hotel in the afternoon. Since Sao Miguel isn´t really that big and you could easily drive around the whole island in one day it did not even took as one hour to arrive at our first stop.

The east side is very famous for its many hydrangeas. They literally grow like weed, nevertheless, they make for a wonderful sight even at this time of the year. One place to see a lot of them and have amazing views over the coastline and the ocean is Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego, a beautiful park and viewing platform near Nordeste. As always and on every spot here on the island we were greated by many cats.

The beautiful thing about rain...Rainbows

If you image search Nordeste on google you will come across all these photos since this is one of the most famous places on the Island. The views combined with the many hydrangeas are just incredible. remember, this was late october and they are still flowering. Hard to imagine how this looks in summer.

Driving along the coast from here to the south of the island you will find several of these amazing Lookouts and one is more beautiful than the other. The weather wasn´t perfect but even this could not do any harm to one of the most beautiful places we´ve seen. You really have to see this beauty to believe it. I´ve seen a lot in the past years but this was something else. Not only the view over the ocean, but also the many lush green meadows make that place special.

And wherever you arrive, as soon as you get out of the car there are friendly cats that say hello. Haven´t seen that many cats in a while.

Unfortunately due to the weather changing so quickly and everything being super wet and muddy we could not visit some of the amazing spots in the south like the waterfall Salto do Prego but instead we went to the small town of Povoação to have lunch and see their beautiful tiny harbour.

From there we went straight to our Hotel Hotel Verde Mar & Spa in Ribeira Grande where we arrived a bit too early. Since the Hotel was absolutely amazing and had everything you need arriving early wasn´t that bad. We were so looking forward to spent the rest of our time there.

The rooms was big enough and we had an amazing view onto the surf break, waves were amazing and weather was getting better...what do you need more.

For me as a passionate surfer, the view of the surf break was the absolute highlight. On the third or fourth day the waves were amazing and the line up wasn´t half as crowded as on the Algarve. Shame I didn't have my board with me.

Stay tuned for my upcoming posts as it gets even better. This island had so much to offer. We were there for 7 days and we did a lot of stuff every day and I still got the feeling we missed out on so many beautiful spots.
