Vücudumuz yaklaşık 100 trilyon hücreden oluşur. Hücreler biraraya gelerek dokuları, dokular biraraya gelerek organları oluşturur. Bütün bu yapılar harikulade bir uyumla çalışır ve metabolizmanın sürekliliğini sağlar. Canlılığın sürdürülmesine “homeostazis” adı verilir. Etimolojik olarak Yunanca “homoios( aynı)” ve “stasis(istikrar, sabit)” kelimelerinden oluşur. “İstikrarlı, aynı kalma” anlamına gelir. Organizmanın yaşamını sürdürebilmesi için iç dengesinin korunması anlamında kullanılır.

All these structures work in a wonderful harmony and ensure the continuity of metabolism. The maintenance of survival is called "homeostasis".
