Hola queridos lectores, en esta oportunidad quiero hablarles de un lugar muy interesante que conocí hace poco: La fortaleza de Valença. Se encuentra ubicada en Portugal, justo a unos pocos kilometros de la frontera con España.
Hello dear readers, this time I want to tell you about a very interesting place that I met recently: The fortress of Valença. It is locatd in Portugal, just a few kilometers from the border with Spain.
Lo interesante de este lugar, según mi perspectiva, es el encantador pueblo que se esconde tras sus murallas; el cual permanece rodeado de turistas, que llegan atraídos por su gran número de pequeñas tiendas donde se venden todo tipo de artículos a precios accesibles, principalmente textiles.
The interesting thing about this place, according to my perspective, is the charming town that hides behind its walls; which remains surrounded by tourists, who come attracted by its large number of small stores where all kinds of items are sold at affordable prices, mainly textiles.
De acuerdo a la opinión de algunos comerciantes del sitio, la mayor parte de turistas que visitan el lugar son los españoles, quienes aprovechan el bajo costo de algunos artículos al compararlos con los precios de su natal España. Un ejemplo de ello ha sido el comercio del café, que como cuenta la historia, en tiempos donde el café en España era muy caro debido a que venía desde América, los españoles vieron más útil venir a Portugal y adquirirlos a mejor precio.
According to the opinion of some local merchants, most of the tourists who visit the place are Spaniards, who take advantage of the low cost of some items when compared to the prices in their native Spain. An example of this has been the coffee trade, which, as the story goes, in times when coffee in Spain was very expensive because it came from America, the Spaniards found it more useful to come to Portugal to acquire it at a better price.
Por otro lado; algo que también se comercializa mucho en Portugal, es la calidad del algodón que utilizan para la elaboración de toallas, manteles, paños de cocina, entre otros... Siendo unos de los principales exportadores de algodón, al menos de Europa.
On the other hand; something that is also very commercialized in Portugal, is the quality of the cotton used for the elaboration of towels, tablecloths, kitchen towels, among others... Being one of the main exporters of cotton, at least in Europe.
Además, en cada una de sus pequeñas tiendas podemos encontrar montones de souvenir relacionados con su historia, como por ejemplo tazas que se estampan con la forma de bordados que las mujeres de la época le hacían a los hombres como muestra de aprecio, o con la impresión de azulejos, característicos de las fachadas de las casas antiguas para evitar la humedad o filtración y hasta de obsequios en forma de gallo, ya que es el animal típico de Portugal.
In addition, in each of its small stores we can find lots of souvenirs related to its history, such as cups that are stamped with the form of embroidery that women of the time made to men as a token of appreciation, or with the printing of tiles, characteristic of the facades of old houses to prevent moisture or seepage and even gifts in the form of rooster, as it is the typical animal of Portugal.
Pero sin duda, lo más impresionante de éste lugar es su imponente infraestructura, digna de su nombre; ubicada a lo alto de una colina, pudiéndose apreciar la vista del río Miño con la ciudad de Tuy - Galicia en el fondo.
A pesar de que no hubo demasiados enfrentamientos entre ambos países fronterizos, estos crearon fortalezas por el temor de que en algún momento pudieran ser invadidos por su adversario, siendo la fortaleza de Valença por el lado de Portugal; mientras que por el lado de España, la catedral de Tuy tiene la particularidad de ser catedral y fortaleza al mismo tiempo.
But undoubtedly, the most impressive of this place is its imposing infrastructure, worthy of its name; located at the top of a hill, being able to appreciate the view of the Miño river with the city of Tuy - Galicia in the background.
Although there were not too many confrontations between both bordering countries, they created fortresses for fear that at some point they could be invaded by their adversary, being the fortress of Valença on the side of Portugal; while on the side of Spain, the cathedral of Tuy has the particularity of being both cathedral and fortress at the same time.
Al detenerte a contemplar el panorama general que ofrece la fortaleza a través las garitas de vigilancia a lo alto de la colina, puedes ser capaz de apreciar detalles que te dan una mejor experiencia.
La primera apreciación que tuve, fue la distribución de la fortaleza desde lo alto de la superficie; observando los soportes donde, a su tiempo, estuvieron los cañones de combate (no estaban presentes al momento de mi visita) y a lo largo del muro, la historia cuenta como el enemigo, al intentar atacar debía pasar primero por la zona de cañones, subir las murallas y continuar con el combate en la parte superior. Adicionalmente, en algún momento existió un foso que se llenaba de agua para dificultar aún más el paso del enemigo.
By stopping to contemplate the general panorama offered by the fortress through the sentry boxes at the top of the hill, you may be able to appreciate details that give you a better experience.
The first appreciation I had, was the distribution of the fortress from the top of the surface; observing the supports where, at the time, were the combat cannons (they were not present at the time of my visit) and along the wall, the story tells how the enemy, when trying to attack had to first pass through the cannon area, climb the walls and continue the fight at the top. Additionally, at some point there was a moat that was filled with water to make it even more difficult for the enemy to pass.
Por supuesto que tengo que mencionar que lo más sobresaliente de la vista es el hermoso río Miño que divide a ambos países y el puente de conexión entre los mismos, que; como dato interesante, fue diseñado por el ingeniero riojano Pelayo Mancebo y Ágreda y no por Gustave Eiffel como se dice erróneamente en muchos casos, aunque quizás haya servido de inspiración.
Of course I have to mention that the most outstanding feature of the view is the beautiful river Miño that divides the two countries and the bridge connecting them, which, as an interesting fact, was designed by the riojan engineer Pelayo Mancebo y Ágreda and not by Gustave Eiffel as is often mistakenly said, although it may have served as an inspiration.
Ya para finalizar, di un último recorrido por el pueblo en general y pude ver parte de las herramientas que utilizaban en la época, tal es el caso de catapultas para lanzar rocas pesadas o los arietes medievales para abrir las puertas y/o muros de fortalezas o castillos ya que los materiales de construcción de paredes en esos tiempos eran débiles y propensos a romperse cuando se golpeaban con fuerza.
Finally, I took a last tour of the town in general and I could see some of the tools that were used at the time, such is the case of catapults to launch heavy rocks or medieval battering rams to open the doors and / or walls of fortresses or castles as the building materials of walls in those times were weak and prone to break when hit with force.
Sin más que agregar, solo las ganas de seguir conociendo en una nueva ocasión más detalles sobre cada espacio de esta fortaleza y del pueblo que protege; aprovechando para invitarlos si tienen la oportunidad de venir a la ciudad de Valença no duden en visitar esta hermosa fortaleza.
