Trees are one of the natural gifts to mankind, so beneficial to both man and animals and very important to our environment. They play vital roles in our ecosystem, and no wonder man and animals depend on them for several purposes. I think having a day to celebrate the Trees is a well-thought-out initiative by anyone who was the brain behind this originally. To be sincere, last month, July 14th, 2024, was the very first time I heard of tree day as the Lagos State, Nigeria, where I reside, celebrated the day.
I reluctantly turned on my television that day and saw the tree planting day program. I became interested and followed through the program and discovered that recognizing the tree day here in Lagos State didn't start this year but had been in existence for the past years. Although my country at large doesn't celebrate this day because I haven't seen that happen since some decades ago I have lived, Lagos State, Nigeria, saw the need to recognize the day and has been encouraging both residents and schools to embark on planting trees both at home and in the school environments. The theme for this year's Tree Day was "Nurture Our Future". According to the state governor, the idea is to create an eco-friendly environment for the good of everyone in the state.
Trees have been a natural source of food for us. Humans are also blessed with herbs from trees, the oxygen we breathe, our furniture and buildings, and the lovely, calming nature it offers us. It's benefits are enormous and worthy of celebration. Although I have never participated in a celebration like this, it's something I will love to advocate for because I believe that many people are yet to understand the treasure embedded in this powerful nature gifted to mankind, and that's why cutting down trees has become rampart without people seeing the need to replant.
Deforestation is a common practice here and has contributed to climate change over the years. We have seen and experienced a fair share of climate change and its challenges here in Lagos State, and without any doubt, planting trees seems to be the best action to mitigate the effect of the climate changes. Imagine if the tree planting day celebration is taken on another level, reaching out to the entire community with a kind of awareness to educate the masses on the importance of replanting trees even as development has taken over the city. It will reduce to a large extent the degree of erosion and the flooding we encounter in the state yearly.
I have never celebrated this day; however, the tradition they follow in the city I reside is marking the day by talking about the benefits of trees to mankind and encouraging schools and residents to get involved in planting trees. But then, I will suggest a better sensitization not only through TV but by hosting a physical gathering of local government by local government where proper education on the benefits of replanting trees will be held and it will be cut across a larger population. This is because many people are not aware, and that's why we don't get the desired result regarding this nature.
Trees will always remain relevant to our ecosystem, and whatever we can do to protect it will be to the benefit of everyone.

Los árboles son uno de los regalos naturales de la humanidad, muy beneficiosos tanto para el hombre como para los animales y muy importantes para nuestro medio ambiente. Desempeñan papeles vitales en nuestro ecosistema, y no es de extrañar que el hombre y los animales dependan de ellos para diversos fines. Creo que tener un día para celebrar los Árboles es una iniciativa bien pensada por quien fuera el cerebro detrás de esto originalmente. Para ser sincero, el mes pasado, el 14 de julio de 2024, fue la primera vez que oí hablar del día del árbol, ya que en el estado de Lagos, Nigeria, donde resido, se celebraba este día.
Ese día encendí la televisión a regañadientes y vi el programa del día de la plantación de árboles. Me interesé y seguí el programa y descubrí que el reconocimiento del día del árbol aquí en el estado de Lagos no había empezado este año, sino que existía desde hacía años. Aunque mi país en general no celebra este día porque no he visto que eso ocurra desde hace algunas décadas que he vivido, el Estado de Lagos, Nigeria, vio la necesidad de reconocer el día y ha estado animando tanto a los residentes como a las escuelas a embarcarse en la plantación de árboles tanto en casa como en el entorno escolar. El tema del Día del Árbol de este año era "Nutrir nuestro futuro". Según el gobernador del estado, la idea es crear un entorno respetuoso con el medio ambiente por el bien de todos los habitantes del estado.
Los árboles han sido una fuente natural de alimento para nosotros. Los humanos también hemos sido bendecidos con las hierbas de los árboles, el oxígeno que respiramos, nuestros muebles y edificios, y la naturaleza encantadora y tranquilizadora que nos ofrece. Sus beneficios son enormes y dignos de celebración. Aunque nunca he participado en una celebración de este tipo, es algo por lo que me encantaría abogar, porque creo que mucha gente aún no ha comprendido el tesoro que encierra esta poderosa naturaleza regalada a la humanidad, y por eso la tala de árboles se ha convertido en un rampante sin que la gente vea la necesidad de replantar.
La deforestación es una práctica común aquí y ha contribuido al cambio climático a lo largo de los años. Hemos visto y experimentado una buena parte del cambio climático y sus desafíos aquí, en el estado de Lagos, y sin ninguna duda, plantar árboles parece ser la mejor acción para mitigar el efecto de los cambios climáticos. Imaginemos que la celebración del día de la plantación de árboles se lleva a otro nivel, llegando a toda la comunidad con una especie de concienciación para educar a las masas sobre la importancia de replantar árboles incluso cuando el desarrollo se ha apoderado de la ciudad. Reduciría en gran medida el grado de erosión y las inundaciones que sufrimos anualmente en el estado.
Nunca he celebrado este día; sin embargo, la tradición que siguen en la ciudad donde resido es celebrar el día hablando de los beneficios de los árboles para la humanidad y animando a las escuelas y a los residentes a implicarse en la plantación de árboles. Pero entonces, voy a sugerir una mejor sensibilización no sólo a través de la televisión, sino mediante la celebración de una reunión física del gobierno local por el gobierno local, donde la educación adecuada sobre los beneficios de la replantación de árboles se llevará a cabo y será cortado a través de una población más grande. Esto se debe a que mucha gente no está concienciada, y por eso no obtenemos el resultado deseado en lo que respecta a esta naturaleza.
Los árboles siempre seguirán siendo relevantes para nuestro ecosistema, y todo lo que podamos hacer para protegerlo redundará en beneficio de todos.
