Being an Adult Child

“What did you want to talk about, honey?” Arch-druidess Bronwen, adorned in cool green and brown regalia, poked at the glass screen covering her chosen baked goods, sweet waffles.

Sara glanced around the bakery, her eyes bouncing across the few customers that had decided to eat their muffins and cakes in the small café nook of the establishment. “I went to see Aunty Wren last weekend, she mentioned that grandma’s memory loss has gotten worse. She wanted me to ask you if you could,” Sara coughed into a balled-up fist, “contribute some time or money to helping out?”

“I do wish Wren would come to me about these things, sending my own daughter as some sort of carrier pigeon is just tasteless,” Bronwen collected her waffles, wrapped in a napkin, dusted with sugar. She took a bite, savouring the fluffy innards and hardened caramelised edges. With a full mouth, she continued, “I already send them a substantial amount of money each month for mother’s care, what more do they want?”

Sara swallowed hard, she was unsure whether due to jealousy of the waffle or to steel herself for what she would say next. “Could you maybe go there this weekend coming? You can iron out the specifics then.”

“Sorry, darling, I’m absolutely swamped. The crisis in the northern ancient woodland has eaten up all of my time, plus that green dragon hatchling we discovered in the east – don’t even get me started!” Bronwen pushed open the front door to the bakery, its bell ringing hollowly.

Sara snapped, “Could you just for one minute think of someone other than yourself?!”

The other customers looked up from their food, the store quieting to a hush.

“Always so melodramatic, dear.” With a shake of her head, Bronwen continued out of the bakery.

Sara followed like a scorned child, driven by complex cocktail of righteous anger and misplaced love.
