no more training | Korean Traditional Martial Arts Taekkyeon

"No more training" When I thought of this prompt, I thought of a master teaching martial arts speaking to a disciple who was being taught.

"There is nothing more to teach. go into the world."
"I taught you everything about me."
"There's no more training, so you should develop and inherit Taekkyeon."

That's what it sounded like.

Song Deok-gi's father had his son taught to Imho, a close friend and Taekkyeon's highest peak.

From the age of 12, Song Deok-gi began receiving full-fledged Taekkyeon classes with several local boys of similar age from Im Ho, a famous Taekkyeon of the time who lived in front of the current Baehwa Girls' High School, and continued for 18 years.

Song Deok-gi was the only one left until the end after entering under the supervision of Imho.

Song Deok-gi remembers the day.

"Mr. Im-ho swept my stomach at the deathbed. It was a sign that the master had transferred everything to the pupil."

I think this means that the master tells his student, "No more training under me. Develop and inherit on your own."

What kind of martial art is Taekkyeon?

It is a bare-handed martial art unique to the Korean people.

Taekkyeon had a man who kept Taekkyeon, who had been doomed to extinction due to the Japanese colonial rule's policy of exterminating Joseon culture with martial arts that had continued since before the Three Kingdoms Period.

Song Deok-gi, the last Taekkyeon of the Joseon Dynasty

Taekkyeon was active in 1983, and Song Deok-ki, born in Yeonseon Village at the foot of Inwangsan Mountain in Seoul, was able to naturally learn Taekkyeon from an early age.

He received intensive training from Imho, a master of Taekkyeon when he was young, and demonstrated Taekkyeon in front of Emperor Gojong.

When Taekkyeon was completely banned due to national cultural policies during the Japanese colonial period, Song Deok-ki secretly trained alone and waited for the right time.

After the liberation of Korea, Song Deok-ki, the only Taekkyeon practitioner in the country, demonstrated Taekkyeon in front of President Syngman Rhee, and began promoting Taekkyeon.

In 1983, Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 76 'Taekkyeon' was designated.

Along with his student Shin Han-seung, he is recognized as a skill holder and designated as the first human cultural asset.

Taekkyeon, which began to spread to everyday sports in the 1990s

It was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.
