Just Once

He had been to the shore so many times that he had lost count and that was one of the many promenades; but never in his life had he ever thought to encounter what he did that midnight.

He was on about his usual stroll on a full moon night. It sounds awfully lonely yet subliminal and hopelessly romantic. There’s always something about the moon that draws almost all humans to its enticing beauty, men, women alike. No matter where you are or the situation, if you can glance at that round ball of glowing mystery, you will take the chance; that’s the same with him. He was as though wandering about on his own, soaking up the spectacular view. Closing his eyes for a moment, he took a deep breath. The cool breeze and the salty smell of the sea engulfed him in an earthly tenderness; a contented sigh escaped his mouth.

The moonlight blessed its glow to the surrounding and in a way, the clueless man didn’t lose himself rather found his being; he felt awakened with each slow step that he took. He walked on this path so many times that he knew he wouldn’t fall off the trail even if his eyes were closed. The sound of a splash in the distance had him alerted but he refused to open his eyes; another splash. He heard a low but sensuous melody from afar but that only put him into a more entranced state.

A flash compelled him to open his eyes; he searched for the source. He was rather annoyed as to what caused his tranquil state to halt and with furrowed brows, he looked to his left; what he saw took his breath away. His mouth gaped in disbelief. He was dazed. How was that even possible to see what he was seeing? His breath quickened in excitement. A hauntingly beautiful woman was sitting on the rock, and he felt an urgent need to run in her direction. With each step he picked up his pace; he didn’t know what he was doing but only knew that he had to be where she was. The desperation in his behavior was apparent, but as soon as he got close to her, he hid behind another rock.

The woman was immersed in her own thoughts. Her silver hair basking in the moonlight, her feet were playing with the waves that crashed near her; she was glittering with the light. She was humming unknowingly to who was stalking her. If only she knew her hums were giving rise to a cyclone in the man's heart standing behind her. This is what she had been doing for centuries; luring men to their death with her songs, and that was all she knew. She never got the chance to make acquaintance with any of them; then again, these men were so feeble-minded that she was only repulsed by them. And there hadn’t been a man that could sway her perspective into another direction. So, along with her other Siren sisters, she caused those men to face death in the most beautiful yet tragic way.

A Siren she was...

Like the man behind her, she was enjoying the full moon, but the man had forgotten all about the moon. Suddenly, he stumbled on a rock and she turned around. She was frightened as soon as their eyes met and she stood up fidgeting. He came out from behind the rock and stepped towards her only to realize that she stepped back towards the sea. She turned around, facing the sea, and was about to jump when he called from behind.

"Wait!!!"

She looked back for a moment, then again prepared herself to jump.

"Please wait!" He carried on. "I apologize for my intrusion. I was so taken by your voice that I felt I had to meet you. I’m sorry if I have startled you, it was not my intention. So silly of me, I kept on rambling and didn’t even introduce myself. My name is Richard. And you?

She just stared at him in confusion, but unlike other men, he did not disgust her. On the contrary, she found him innocuous and charming, which was the base of her confused emotion. After a few minutes, she finally spoke to him.

"Nahnna" She said. "My name is Nahnna"
"It’s a pleasure to meet you, Nahnna? Do you live around here?"
"No." She paused. "I have to go." She turned around.
"Wait!! Please!!!" He was ardent. "Can I see you again?"
"I can’t see you again."
"Why?" He felt defeated.

She didn’t answer him but jumped into the sea and he lost her. But Nahnna was curious as much as him.

A mortal managed to make a Siren curious.
