A Gift to Johnny on his 20th Birthday

Johnny had been sitting in that half-lit hall for almost twenty minutes, waiting for Diana. He was expecting to see a lady appear and provide him with the promised shelter he needed during his troubled time. He was gazing at the water-stained wall constantly.

He was thinking about his parents who left this world, leaving him all alone 3 years ago as a 17-year-old. Oh, that was a terrible car accident. He looked at the source of light that was coming from a thin, gray tube slanting across the cracked glass of the window on that wall.

Suddenly, his wait was over as Diana entered the room and waved at him. She looked too serious for a 30-year-old. Her face was too mature for her age. She pushed her blonde hair away from her face. He looked at Diana and gave her a smile. She came close and smiled back.

Johnny was feeling embarrassed, so he looked at the wall. He tried to find the meaning of that drawing on the wall. Then he looked at the clock. The time was 8.08. Then he looked at the drawing again. It was a good one. Johnny heard Diana say, "Let’s allot you a room now".

Johnny picked up his bag and walked with her. He wanted to tell her that he would leave her shelter as soon as the situation improved and he got a job. But he kept mum as he walked with her. Then he smiled again as he entered the office and filled out his details. He suddenly realized it was his 20th birthday today.

He didn’t even realize when he said, "Oh, it's my birthday today, what a coincidence". Johnny thought today was my birthday and I was going to live in a shelter. Johnny slowly glanced at Diana, her face seemed a bit surprised. Suddenly, Diana touched his chin, and slowly sang, "Happy Birthday to you". Her voice was slow but clear. Her tone sounded sacred. She was singing the way a mother or sister sings a song with affectionate love.

Diana slowly took out a medicine card from the bunch of medicine cards in her bag and handed one to Johnny with an eagle printed on it. Johnny thought that was the best gift he could get in such a situation.
