The Midnight Witch

Source

"She comes only at night, clothed in white. Her glory accompanied by lightning and dark clouds. She has a taste for blood. She renews her strength with the souls of the innocent. Her only mission is to deliver death at your doorpost and fairer and fairer she will be. She lives amongst us."

The chief priest chants as he performs rites to cleanse the land of the midnight witch. Sprinkling an ash-like substance on the street.

"Oh great witch! We plead your mercy. For your wrath has left us childless and your scorn leaves us in fear of the unknown. Have pity on us for we're mere mortal" he continued.

The tales of the midnight witch that comes to take the life of the little kids were no longer a rumour. The people of the land lived in fear as no one knew when next or who she would visit next.

The great oracle of the land has been summoned on several occasions. He has been appeased with different offers that he might tell us the solution to the great calamity that has befallen our land but on several occasions he will give the exact same reply.

"The dead live among you revered in beauty" the great oracle voice will echo as the elders of the land consult him in the great Amaodudu shrine. No one understands what the oracle meant by that.

Days turned to months and months turned to years and we continued to live in fear of the unknown. Who knows whose house it will be next. Going at this rate there will be no more innocent little ones living amongst us as the people of Amaodudu are scared of giving birth, only to be taken at night by the evil one.

Nobody knows the reason for this calamity that has befallen us apart from what the chief priest had only told us on one occasion. That the midnight witch was a former indigene of our great land who was unjustly accused of black magic and banished from our land with her little son. She lost her son while in exile and blames the people of Amaodudu for it. Now she seeks revenge on the people of Amaodudu.

I looked from the window as the Chief priest kept on with his chants along the streets of Amaodudu.

Will these be the end of the midnight witch?
