Knock. Knock.

"House keeping!"

The shrill voice of the hotel staff woke Gia abruptly. The sharp pains from her rib cage and shoulder made her memories rush back instantaneously and in full force. She'd showered and was waiting for her husband, Nathan, to join her in the room. Then there was a knock on the door and she excitedly opened it without questioning who it was.

A bullet to her right shoulder sent her staggering back into the room in shock as a masked man followed her in and shut the door quietly. He wore black gloves on both hands. Another shot to her side and she fell across the bed, unconscious.

She screamed in her head, warning Nathan not to come up to the room and hope he could somehow hear her wherever he was.

Gia slowly opened one eye, wondering how long she was unconscious. Then she saw that the masked man was still in the room. She held her breath in shock. He was folding a copy of the bank's blueprint into his pocket. The bank where Nathan worked. Was this a robbery? What did the masked man want?

Knock. Knock.

The masked man turned towards the bed area and Gia quickly shut her eyes, praying he did not see her. The masked man walked to the window, pulled it open and jumped out. Gia resumed breathing.

Sharp pain from the intake of breath made her cry out. There was a shuffling outside the door and Nathan burst in with the hotel staff.

"My darling! Gia! What happened?" He held her head gently against his chest, rocking her as the staff called for emergency medical attention.
