The school bell rang and students excitedly dispersed, everyone eager to go home or wherever they wanted. Amina stood and calmly pushed her books into her worn out backpack. Bernice, whose desk was on another row, farther from Amina, sat and quietly watched the teenage girl pick up her worn backpack.

Amina was one of the new students in their class and Bernice was curious about her. Amina rarely talked to anyone. She was a loner but very intelligent. She aced the Math test they had the day before and surprised everyone.

Bernice preferred to associate with intelligent people so she was determined to break through Amina's shell. She picked up her bag and walked up to Amina.

"Amina, wait up."

Amina turned, saw her and walked on. Huh? Bernice thought.

"Hey Amina. Are you heading home?"

Amina halted. "Oh, you were talking to me?"

Bernice looked behind her to see whether there was someone else Amina could be referring to. "Of course, I was, silly. I was not sure you heard me."

Amina wondered why Bernice, one of the beautiful, rich girls in the school, would talk to her.

"And I was not sure you were talking to me. Why are you talking to me?" Amina asked.

Bernice was dumbfounded. Amina's question was unexpected. "Um, nothing. I thought we could walk home together."

Amina stared at her for a moment and nodded. "Okay, but I live in the Rake."

Bernice smiled slightly. The Rake was a densely packed part of their city where the poor and some average income earners lived. "That is alright with me. I have been to the Rake before."

Amina raised her eyebrows. "Alright. How about you come home with me? My mother would love to meet my classmates. She makes the best carrot cakes in the Rake."

Bernice was grinning in excitement already. She realised how easy it was to be friends with Amina.

"I would love to eat a piece of carrot cake."

Bernice and Amina went home together and became best friends.
