Decálogo del lector

4.png

Reader's Decalogue

13.png

A reader must have a favorite author with whom he must never stop communicating, because to read him is to converse with him, to listen to his conversation; that is why he must read and reread his work, his life, it must be one of the fascinations of his profession. He must also read the favorite authors of his favorite author in order to understand with greater accuracy and dimension, the thought and work of his favorite author.

When a reader has a favorite author, he can help new readers find their favorite authors, because he has an idea to share, an experience. When a reader has one or several favorite authors, he can be calm, confident that in the morning he will open his eyes and there, under his pillow, he will find his treasure: his favorite story or poem, his favorite chapter or scene, but if he does not have a favorite author and does not go in search of him, he lacks something transcendental, because a favorite author teaches to love books, those of that author and the books of others.

If possible, he should also have a picture on the wall of his favorite author, but first, his books; and like the big bad wolf who disguised himself as a grandmother, he should confidently wait for the new readers who will knock on the door of his experience, of his profession and once inside, he has the obligation to take off his disguise of a self-conscious adult and to enlarge his eyes, his nose, his arms and especially his mouth, to guide those who need to devour books better.

A reader should also read those who are not his favorite authors, for how then will he talk about a favorite author if he has not read enough to be sure who will be literary passion for the rest of his life; and if another reader, for example, asks him "Why should we read the Brothers Grimm or Garcia Marquez or Edgar Alan Poe first?" The reader should only invite them to read those authors, and others, so that they themselves learn to answer their own questions.

A reader is, for good reasons, a magician who does not need hat tricks because he has words, always ready to collaborate with him; with words he can make the bad times of children disappear or cheer up the moments of the older ones; he can sail with them in pirate ships, put them in ghostly castles, chase the last unicorn, help modern fairies and all that he has achieved in his imagination thanks to his reading experience.

Ah! imagination, I forgot, a reader, by having a favorite author that he always reads and rereads, by reading the favorite authors of his favorite author, is able to convince us that Pinocchio exists, Borges, Puss in Boots, the tooth fairy; that Oscar Wilde, Aquiles Nazoa, Jairo Aníbal Niño or Harry Potter are so real that we can find them reading in a park, flying kites, riding tricycles, talking to the birds or playing hide and seek.

If you haven't found your favorite author yet; the good thing is that you have time to start, that you have what you need; the disposition, the books, the time, that you can steal from life, as you steal time from life to love, to walk or to lose it. It is up to you.
