Dahlia English

profession : Singer

Dahlia English, is a singer who loves her name, she thinks it’s exotic. Dahlia likes to sing the blues and write her own material when she’s alone in her loft, but she’s very unpopular with her neighbors because of it.

Most nights, Dahlia can be found at Cooking Joe’s, which is as upmarket as its name implies. She sings covers of Adele and Andra Day; she hates it, but there’s no denying that she’s rather good. She’d prefer to sing her own songs, but Joe says there’s no market for them in his bar; she needs her job, so she doesn’t nag too frequently.

Dahlia always has nagging doubts in the back of her mind because of her mother. Her mother is an attorney with a large firm in New York, she hates everything about her daughter’s lifestyle. She likes to call Dahlia late at night and reiterated her warning that the profession she’s chosen will lead to her becoming nothing more than a lap dancer, sidelined by younger failed singers, much like herself.

She is trying to give up smoking because she’s scared of contracting “Sundowner Syndrome” but she’s finding it challenging because the timbre of her voice isn’t nearly so good if she hasn’t had a few smokes during the day. She’s afraid, however, that the constant smoke infused atmosphere she lives in might affect her looks - her mom’s warning usually echoes loudest at times like these. She’s taken to trolling the makeup counters in upmarket malls, she hasn’t bought any of the extremely expensive “youth serums” yet, but she writes down all their names and effects, just in case.

She hates meat and sometimes gets into heated bar fights at Joe’s as a result. But, Dahlia can handle herself, she always wins these fights because she stays sober at work and has a pair of steel biker’s “grill” handcuffs hidden behind the bar for particular use should the occasion arise.

Dreams of a recording contract, a beautiful miniature dog to keep her company and a litany of men, panting after her every move are the motivators that keep her moving in her average world. The thing is, you never know, do you? Look what happened to Susan Boyle...
