A Greater Power

Nothing is easy…

That’s something Gareth knew with absolute certainty.
He knew it the way he understood most things; how a shell echoed the sea, was one of his “knowings”. He had a deep insight into nature, a rare gift.

But, it wasn’t useful, in a manner that he coveted.

Gareth wanted to make a difference. He wanted to influence fate.

...and he knew he could, because he’d seen the evidence.

If he was feeling grim; the day was gray
If he was motivated; the day was bright.

Little things that added up in his mind and made him aware of his sensitivity.

But, power was of no use if it couldn’t do some good.

Gareth understood things, uniquely, but he couldn’t influence people’s lives.

...and so it came to pass

...that a tumultuous storm came down in vengeance; it was a mighty force wielded directly on the people of his town.

But he had predicted it, even though they had taken no heed.

When word got around, he was much sought after, the way any fortune teller might be.

He felt his power and he saw his fame rise. He felt important. He heard men and women remark on the accuracy of his prediction.

“Did you see? He was perfectly on mark. It was a good shot, a direct hit is what he said we’d get.”

Many others followed in the same vein.

Gold, riches and the people’s love followed like a torrent of unabated affection.

But, it came to pass

that a swift wind blew up, a lethal wind

Gareth looked at the sky, confused by his lack of insight…

“Why have you forsaken me?” He implored of the heavens

There was no response. Only an ill breeze blowing nonsense into his head.

Silly, thoughts, like there was a chain of command, an ordered process where he was only a link rather than the chain

...and, finally, he understood.
