Usually a trail is left behind by someone in other for others to follow, whether intentionally or otherwise, it does not matter, the most important thing is the trail. I saw this trail sceneries first in the movies, especially in a hot pursuit. The pursuers follow the trail of the person they are pursuing, and if the pursued is clever, he covers his track and makes the trail go cold. He stops giving clues as to his movement, mostly creating a diversion to send them the wrong way. It's more difficult when the dogs are involved, they can smell you from a mile away. When you hit the trail, there's no coming back.
