Unpleasant smell is not good for the body, once my nose detect the smell, I feel somehow and I try to leave the environment. The smell of a decay is even more horrifying because it involves something living before it died. The way our nostrils and body was fashioned is that we adjust to the smell of the new environment in a couple of minutes, so that we will not perceive such smell after a while but it is still there. So it is best to get rid of the decay or avoid the environment till it is safe.
