The recurring meaning I know of chronic is the persistency, I also know it's main use is with sickness. So I thought it had to do with a very critical sickness but I can see now that it reflects the persistency of the sickness or disease and not the disease in itself. Sometimes it is funny how a single word can have a meaning that is so interrelated. Chronic is an old word, at least I know that.
