A major stamp on a product or item makes it unique, it can even be a special brand eventually. A design is peculiar to it's designer because it's features are his idea, it can be personal or probably a theory he intends to proof or develop. It doesn't have to be something big, it is just what we do on a daily basis. We can use our designs and inputs as a feature peculiar to only us.
