The River Goddess: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

She was once a peaceful Lady, so calm and loving, and was called the princess from the East by the indigenes of Omua village because her dressings were like that of the easterners. She was tall, fair and beautiful, everyman in Omua admired her which stirred jealousy among other ladies. She had four friends, Ife, Titi, Ayo, and jumoke. They envied her believing she had stolen the best of things from them including the men they loved. Ada, known as the princess of the east, was espoused to Kunle, a young rich man who was the eye of every young lady in the village.

A week to their wedding, one fateful evening, the four girls invited Ada, who was known as the princess of the east, to the river to take their bath, where she was drowned and her body thrown in the river.

Ada's spirit found no rest angered by the betrayal of her friends. Every evening she comes to the water surface where she was drowned wearing a half gown and cries which cause thunderbolts and lightning. The people of Omua never found rest as she caused dark clouds to waver around them and the storm to strike their livestock in the fields.

People who didn't know her called her the goddess of the river but people of Omua knew it was Ada and wondered why the once peaceful Lady now lives in grief and pain. It became a concern for them as they sought to find the cause of her death because her anger was noticed to be focused on her people.

After months of searching for answers, her friends confessed to be the culprits behind her death and begged for Ada to be appeased. Rituals were done to appease Ada who had turned their rivers to red and made the sky to hold rain. Finally, Ada's spirit was consoled and she was never seen roaming in the river again.
