Derek stopped in the doorway, his voice was tight, “Then I won't go. I need to treasure every last moment”
“No, you must go. You must go and try to bring back a piece of the star to heal her with. I will stay with her. I don't have any other patients right now, and we have been friends for a long time. I know what she means to you. This is your last hope.”
Derek leaned forward and rested his head against the star. This had been it, his last hope. Watching his wife die had been hard enough, and then the doctor had given him this last little glimmer of hope, that maybe, just maybe, she would live. Three days of hard riding had been for nothing, and now, for all Derek knew he would return back to his home to find his wife already gone from this world.
