When I saw you so busy, chirping and swimming back and forth, I got tired of walking and decided to stop a long the water and sit on the bench. And just start looking at you and your work. You are black with a white beak. Very busy with the preparations for the upcoming motherhood. The nest is firm and neatly hidden in the reeds on the bank side. You have 9 eggs in your beautiful nest and I see father swimming in the distance with a twig. feathers, plastic, cardboard and reed are the fixed components of the new house. What a dedication before even giving birth. I just wanted to say, I salute you for your dedication, and I want to wish you good luck with the offspring.

This is my morning and my own pictures.

I used my own walk this morning to do this blog. It’s a COOT, the Eurasian Coot, Fulica atra - Rallen (Rallidae)
In Holland we call her a MEERKOET

There is almost no park, canal or ditch in the Netherlands without coots. Fresh water with some riparian vegetation is enough. The numbers in the Low Netherlands are greatest. During the breeding season, these black birds fiercely defend their territory from intruders. Completely sooty gray with a black head and a narrow white wing trailing edge. Pointed, white beak and white blaze. Adults have a red iris. Has two to three clutches per breeding season, which runs from March to July. Usually 6-10 eggs. Incubation time: 21-25 days. Usually breeds near other coots, which are fiercely fought for the best spot. But coots also breed uncovered on a floating nest. Nests usually made of reeds and roots, also used all kinds of waste in the city. The young leave the nest immediately and can fly after about 56 days. Are fed by the parents in the beginning. Usually breeds in freshwater riparian vegetation. Coots forage on and around the water. Coots are originally swamp birds, with legs that are particularly suitable for walking on floating vegetation (kraggen) and roots of reed and iris swamps. But can actually be found everywhere where there is fresh water: brooks and lakes, swamps, banks, park and garden, ponds, reed land and ruggedness, rivers, urban areas and (land) pools. Areas with considerable bank vegetation are particularly popular, although the species can also survive in canals with a shoring and hardly any water plants. In winter, groups - which can consist of many hundreds of birds - can stay in meadows.

Coots mainly eat aquatic plants, but especially when there are young, all kinds of aquatic animals, such as snails and fish, are also fed and eaten. They also eat grass. Coots often dive for food. Due to the large amount of air in their plumage, they have to make an effort to get under water; they jump while diving and push off with their paws. Shortly afterwards they come back up like a big float. Coots that breed in the Netherlands usually also spend the winter in the Netherlands. Some of them move to Spain and Portugal. Many coots from northeastern regions also hibernate in the Netherlands. In the autumn, tens of thousands of coots gather on the Veluwemeer and the Markermeer in search of aquatic plants. More spread later. Migrates at night and solitary and can sometimes be heard in the spring.

Varied: including yelping, sneezing and soft sounds.
