David Davis, was a patient at Peace Medicine. About 10 years ago David discovered he had a kidney disease. He had no idea there was anything wrong with me, as he was extremely healthy and fit. Luckily, his condition was discovered through a simple blood test.
David thought back to the time when he had sat with his girlfriend, Flora, while she was having a dialysis treatment in a New York hospital, David tried to imagine how hard it could be for Flora to sit still for such a long time while her blood was swirling around in a machine. Ironically, it was the same day Flora told David that she had a lung transplant.
For the first few months, David was thrown off balance. His life was going to change radically. No one ever knew for sure how David got his kidney disease. He wasn’t aware of anyone in his family having it. By default, it was assumed that David got it from a medication he had been taking several years ago.

Just when David started to come to terms with the dialysis and began looking for a live donor, he got even more bad news: he had liver cancer. Needless to say, he gave up on the idea of searching for a kidney donor. He wouldn’t be eligible to receive a kidney while he was undergoing treatment. Besides, David had something else that was more pressing at least for the moment. He cried for an entire 24 hours after receiving the news. Cancer! . . .He had lost both of his parents, in their fifties, to cancer. Yet, that was a long time ago, when treatment was far less advanced. David chances of survival were good.
He was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive Stage 0 cancer. He would have been scared, but his younger brother, who’s a radiologist, was very positive, and said, “David, a lumpectomy is small potatoes compared to a kidney transplant!” This made David have a relief and was ready to deal with two of his diseases.
