Yesterday I told you about the oldest meteorites found, and today I will explain which is the largest.

Weighing 60 tonnes and composed of 82% iron and 18% nickel, Hoba is the largest meteorite known on Earth.

Its shape is flat and smooth, making it look more like a giant metal slab.

It was discovered in 1920 by a farmer in the village of Hoba West, in present-day Namibia, when his plough struck an object that emitted a metallic sound.

After digging up the meteorite, the local government believed that it could not be removed from the site because of its enormous mass, so they decided to leave it in place.

It is estimated that the meteorite hit the Earth's ground at extremely low speeds about 80,000 years ago, which may explain the strange reason why it did not create any craters when it hit the Earth's surface.

It is estimated to be between 400 and 200 million years old.

Visitors report a funny acoustic effect when they get on it: "When you speak, your voice takes on a metallic tone. You sound like your own robot version".
