A little town called Clair was the setting where the librarian, Clara justify the lie to her friend. During the examination on the rare book's disappearance, however, she denied any knowledge about it. What was not so secret however was that she knew her friend, Ethan, had borrowed it. She understood that he was in economic problems; she wouldn't let him down. Being the center of the gossip about which the others whispered, Clara's guilt was biting. Yet, when Ethan returned the book, she experienced a kind of peaceful serenity. As her close friend was in danger and she interpreted the lie as a need for self-sacrifice in order to protect him, she nevertheless promised herself never to break her integrity again.
