Yesterday we decided to visit Budapest. Finally, there is such an opportunity. Since we are vaccinated, we can visit any country in Europe until August 9 without tests and quarantine. So we went to Hungary in the morning. The day seemed gray and gloomy. From time to time it rained heavily but we still went to the goal. When we arrived in Budapest, it was not raining there but the clouds had already covered the whole sky. This time we came with a specific purpose to see an unusual monument. When we reached it, it started to rain. It seemed to me that the sky was crying. And no wonder. In the photos you see not just shoes. Moreover, it is not a monument to some famous couturier. This is a tragic mention of the victims of the Holocaust. You really see different shoes in the photo: men's, women's and children's. And it's sad. And now I'll tell you why ...
Вчора ми вирішили відвідати Будапешт. Нарешті з'явилася така можливість. Так як ми вакциновані, то до 9 серпня можемо відвідувати будь-яку країну Європи без тестів та карантину. Тож з самого ранку ми вирушили до Угорщини. День видався сірим та похмурим. Час від часу йшов великий дощ але ми все одно прямували до цілі. Коли ми приїхали в Будапешт, то там дощу не було але хмари вже закрили все небо. В цей раз ми приїхали з конкретною ціллю побачити незвичайний пам'ятник. Коли ми дійшли до нього, то почав крапати дощ. Мені здавалося, що небо плаче. І не дивно. На фотографіях ви бачите не просто взуття. Тим паче, це не пам'ятник якомусь відомому кутюр'є. Це трагічна згадка про жертв Голокосту. Ви дійсно бачите на фотографії різне взуття: і чоловіче, і жіноче, і дитяче. І це сумно. А зараз я вам розповім чому...
At the end of World War II, mass executions of the Jewish people took place here. The shootings were carried out by the Nazi Hungarian organization "Crossed Arrows". They did not want to bury Jews, so it was decided to shoot people on the Danube. But that's not all.
В кінці Другої світової війни на цьому місці відбувалися масові розстріли єврейського народу. Розстріли проводила нацистська угорська організація "Схрещені стріли". Вони не хотіли займатися похованням євреїв, тому було вирішено розстрілювати людей у Дунаї. Але це ще не все.
Jews were brought to this embankment in large trucks. People were ordered to take their shoes and sent barefoot to long barges. Shoes remained, and people were taken to the river. In order to save bullets, people were lined up and connected to each other. After that, the first person was shot. The dead man fell into the river and dragged everyone else. Among them were women and children. Shoes left on the waterfront, the Nazis took away or sold.
На цю набережну привозили євреїв на великих вантажівках. Людям наказували зняти своє взуття і відправляли босими на довгі баржі. Туфлі залишалися, а людей вивозили в річку. Для того, щоб економити кулі, людей ставили в ряд та зв'язували один з одним. Після цього стріляли в першу людину. Людина мертва падала в річку і всіх інших тягнула за собою. Серед них були жінки і діти. Взуття, яке залишилося на набережній, фашисти забирали собі або продавали.
I can't even imagine the fear and frightened eyes of the people. 60 pairs of shoes: both adult and children's ... I have seen many memorials in my life, but this one touched my heart the most. Tens of thousands of victims. The warmth of human feet in abandoned shoes. Hundreds or even thousands of tourists come to this monument every day. We come to honor the memory of those who were killed in this place. One man once decided that he could decide the fate of the Jews and destroy them. But today we come to this place and our heart freezes. People bring ribbons and lamps on their shoes. People bring sweets and toys to children's shoes.
Я навіть і уявити собі не можу той страх та перелякані очі людей. 60 пар взуття: і дорослого, і дитячого... Я в своєму житті бачила багато меморіалів але саме цей найбільше сколихнув моє серце. Десятки тисяч жертв. Тепло людських ніг у залишеному взутті. Кожного дня до цього пам'ятника приходять сотні, а то й тисячі туристів. Ми приходимо вшанувати пам'ять тих, хто був вбитий на цьому місці. Колись одна людина вирішила, що може вирішувати долі євреїв та знищувати їх. Та сьогодні ми приходимо на це місце і наше серце завмирає. На туфлі люди приносять стрічки та лампадки. В дитяче взуття люди приносять цукерки та іграшки.
To some, this monument seems funny. For me, it is one of the most poignant and emotional. The sad page of our history. What a pity that pain and death cannot be erased from it.
Для когось цей пам'ятник здається кумедним. Для мене він один із самих пронизливих та емоційних. Сумна сторінка нашої історії. Як же ж шкода, що не можна зтерти з неї біль та смерть.
