It is said that when you look at it, there is a feeling as if its top meets the sky. In ancient times, locals considered the pillar a symbol of the God of fertility. Even after the arrival of Christianity in Georgia, the sacred significance of the pillar remained. People believed that on top of it you can get closer to the Lord, so they built a church there between the VI and VIII centuries.

It remained in force until the Ottoman Empire invaded the country. In the first half of the 1940s, a group of researchers managed to climb the pillar. After that, the place was visited by pilgrims.

They climbed up using a ladder left by the climbers. Now in the Katshi pillar there is a stone church built at the turn of XX and XXI centuries. It is built on the ruins of an old temple and has a modest interior.
