# Beatriz, observa desde la pequeña ventana de su cabaña de madera en medio del bosque, como el astro rey se levanta en los cielos trayendo con ello un nuevo día lleno de responsabilidades. Esta hermosa chica gitana es la hija de un granjero dedicado al cultivo de hierbas medicinales en un pequeño huerto cercano al Barranco de los Lobos, un sitio oscuro y desolado al que casi ninguna persona en su sano juicio se atreve a acercarse, por miedo a las cosas terribles que se cuenta pasan allí. Sin embargo, la familia de herbarios encontró en esta alejada zona las condiciones perfectas para la reproducción de hongos y otras hierbas que venden a muy buenos precios en los pueblos locales, aunque ello implica un largo viaje, que normalmente realiza solo el desgastado agricultor, ausentándose de su casa por varios días. Beatriz se levanta de la cama muy temprano para terminar con rapidez todas sus responsabilidades aprovechando la ausencia de su padre, intentará sacar el tiempo necesario para alistarse y emprender el largo viaje por el camino de tierra, que la conducirá en la tarde hasta el pueblo cercano de Sorbas donde se efectúa la feria de otoño de 1890, un evento de gran impacto en la provincia de Armería del para entonces Reino de España. Esta joven gitana es el objeto del deseo de casi cualquier muchacho adinerado en edad de compromiso, incluso también de cualquier viejo con deseos perversos de sacarle provecho a su dinero comprando una esposa joven que pueda darle herederos. Su largo cabello negro como el azabache, se extiende sobre una blanca piel de porcelana resaltando su cuerpo de guitarra, siendo capaz de despertar la lujuria con su inocencia en cualquier hombre que posara su vista en esta joya de la arboleda. Ya comenzaba a precipitarse la oscuridad sobre el poblado cuando la chica cruzó las puertas de la fortificación, saludando con su singular sonrisa resplandeciente a los guardias de la entrada. Desde lo lejos, Miguel, un chico de casi su misma edad que trabaja como jornalero campesino, se siente completamente atraído por ella desde la primera vez que cruzaron miradas. Este glamuroso prospecto de fornida musculatura y tupida barba negra, no duda en acercarse e intercambiar palabras con la bella Beatriz quien sonríe bajando la cabeza con un simpático gesto de vergüenza aceptando los halagos, sin duda nació entre ellos la magia que llaman amor haciéndolos olvidarse del tiempo, fue tan candente la chispa que nació al cruzar miradas que conversaron durante horas ignorando por completo todas las actividades de la fiesta. El cielo encapotado repentinamente se despejó por una brisa caliente, iluminando todos los campos con el reflejo de un resplandeciente y especialmente gigantesca luna llena. Beatriz recuerda que debe marcharse, pues la cabaña donde vive queda bastante lejos y le supone un recorrido de al menos una hora a pie. Miguel, como todo un caballero se ofrece para acompañarla y así evitar que su enamorada camine por el solitario trecho polvoriento durante la noche. Los tortolitos enlazados bajo los efectos de la música celestial de cupido hacen el camino a casa de Beatriz sin contratiempos, sobre la carreta de madera jalada por un agotado asno que el joven normalmente utiliza en sus labores la cual tiene un olor bastante desagradable. La velada se hacía aberrantemente cálida, Miguel continuaba avanzando dejando un rastro sonoro con el rechinar de las ruedas de su carreta, al llegar al comienzo del Puente de los Guapos, pudo ver a un lado de la carretera un pequeño perro que gemía y jadeaba muerto de sed en aquella inmensidad desolada, así que lo recogió para que le hiciera compañía, le dio un poco de agua y lo metió en una de las alforjas. Tan solo había recorrido unos metros, cuando una sorpresiva ráfaga de viento extrañamente frío, sopló fuertemente apagando el único farol del carruaje, sumergiendo a Miguel en una densa oscuridad. Esto lo espantó mucho y por más que trató no pudo encender nuevamente la luz, entonces ordenó al burro que anduviera más rápido, pero el animal se sentía asustado, tenso, totalmente paralizado y se negó a moverse, como si una pesada carga le impidiese dar un paso. Desde sus espaldas se comenzaron a escuchar amenazantes gruñidos. Miguel lentamente se volteó aterrorizado, tratando de hablar al pequeño cachorro en busca de alguna clase de apoyo, pero para su desdicha, lo que alguna vez fue un indefenso animal, ahora se había transformado en un monstruo gigantesco, con la figura de un hombre, pero con la cabeza de un lobo. Los ojos rojos de la criatura se encendieron como las brasas del infierno cuando el cielo se despejó y dejó aparecer la luz de la luna llena, teñida de una tonalidad sangrienta que anunciaba el preludio del destino que le esperaba a este pobre hombre. Tras propinarle una feroz mordida cerca del cuello, la fiera dirigió su mirada al cielo emitiendo un ensordecedor aullido que retumbó en todos los alrededores entre las sombras. Miguel aprovechó el descuido y logró escapar colándose entre la maleza, sorpresivamente el lobo en lugar de seguirlo en busca de su presa solo echó a correr hasta desaparecer en la oscuridad como si alguien lo hubiese llamado de alguna manera. Miguel sintió como su corazón latía tan fuerte que parecía salir de su pecho y al mismo tiempo, la tensión en sus venas aumentaba al punto de sentir hervir la sangre dentro de su cuerpo, totalmente fuera de sí, regresó a donde estaba la carreta y logró conseguir que el terco animal que la arreaba se moviera, corriendo tan velozmente como nunca lo había hecho. After giving him a ferocious bite near the neck, the beast turned its gaze to the sky, emitting a deafening howl that echoed throughout the surroundings in the shadows. Miguel took advantage of the carelessness and managed to escape by sneaking into the undergrowth, surprisingly the wolf instead of following him in search of its prey just ran away until it disappeared in the darkness as if someone had called it somehow. Miguel felt his heart beating so hard that it seemed to come out of his chest and at the same time, the tension in his veins increased to the point of feeling the blood boil inside his body, totally out of his mind, he returned to where the wagon was and managed to get the stubborn animal that was herding it to move, running as fast as it had never done before.
