Into The Light | A Mixed Media Art Project

Into The Light

An outcast.

On a hotbed of coals I sit,
tangled in the web of crimes to which I stammer to admit.

A stab of fear assaults me, as I assaulted them.

I cared not for their pain.
I cared not for their suffering.
I cared not for their loved ones left to the promises of hymns.

My crimes on display for all to judge.

My silent pleas now for mercy waffle aimlessly toward anguished faces.

Yet, mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers, all familiar, stare back from faraway places.

My future no longer in my hands, I jerk a sharp silent breath,
as the verdict is pronounced to the world.

As I return to the heat of the struggles, the adrenaline flowed.
I forgot the color drains and knees grow weak in the company of closed spaces.

You see, it was in their eyes. The victims of my rage.

In the failed grasp for redemption, I have no right to cringe or fake an outcry.

The world owes me nothing.
I took from it innocent lives. I gave back nothing during my time on this Earth.

I sit here now, an outcast from that very place I long to mingle.

Across the expanse of my future dwelling, I see no absolution.

My time draws near.
I am languid.
No glimmer of hope.

The same glimmer my victims pressed to their breasts,
as my eyes sharpened with vengeance.

My head rests now as my innards squash from blight.

Alas, my eyes close slowly. My heart retreats.
Is this how it ended for them?

Suddenly, hope glows, as if they are beckoning me

Into The Light.

For my current mixed media art project, I wanted to address the theme of redemption. Can a person be redeemed? Can one atone for this misgivings? I feel that it all depends on whether the person truly is repentant. To be forgiven for one's evil deeds or wrongdoing is the ultimate quest. I share a project that I feel embodies a person's evil deeds and his quest for redemption after being found guilty of his crimes.

I began with an unusual image I located from a free site as my inspiration. The wrongdoer is resting alone in a cave across the bay away from everyone. This place signifies the person's break with society.

To this image I added the person. The image I chose is of a glass statue. I wanted to portray a person whose heart and soul has turned cold to humanity. My interest in the image is that of the figurine only.

To complete the scene, I locate other images I felt added a sense of urgency to the theme. An angel is sought by the criminal to pray for his redemption. Also, the criminal rests on "coals of fire" as an emphasis that he is troubled.

Finally, three pure fractals I created in the fractal rendering program, Apophysis, are included to add an air of mystery.

This image served as the angel of redemption.

This fractal was used as a portal to redemption.

To blend all the images, I uploaded them into Canva to take advantage of my upgraded membership. Pro features such as background removal, sizing, filters, and colorizing helped to create a haunting scene of a person in agony after judgement has been rendered for his crimes.

First, I started with a blank canvas. The cave was perfect as the background scene.

To this, I added the portal. Next, I added the condemned criminal.

Finally, I added the angel that he sought.
