Taphephobia is the fear of being buried alive.

"The Premature Burial" is a story written by Edgar Allan Poe and published in July 1844 in The Philadelphia Dollar Newspaper. The story is based on a very common fear at the time: taphephobia, or the fear of being buried alive.

This illustration made with acrylic paint in 2007 is inspired by this story. Can you imagine waking up inside a coffin, in complete darkness and unable to move? It must be scary! I imagined what would happen to a person who, after being drunk and losing consciousness or after suffering an episode of catalepsy, was placed in a narrow coffin without the possibility of leaving.

In the chronicles of my hometown there is the story of a wealthy woman, hated by many, who suffered one of these episodes of catalepsy and was buried in the catacombs of the church. The priest heard screams and strange sounds for several days, but did not say anything for fear of being labeled a madman. A few centuries later, archaeologists opened the catacombs and found the skeleton of this woman lying on the stairs. Of course hers, out of her coffin.

I hope you liked the story and also the illustration.

Deadly hugs everyone!
