Let's Volt In! Voltes V, My First Anime

Do you still remember the first anime you've watched?

In my country, Philippines, anime was a staple in our local television channels every afternoon, and sometimes during morning too. However, this was only from the 1990s and early 2000s. Slowly, soap operas replaced anime until it was gone. Meh.

If memory serves me right, the very first anime I remember watching was the "Voltes V". As a little girl, around three or four years old, I do not have a choice which show to watch since it was my brother who would always navigate through the television channels. In addition, computers were non-existent to us back then and so we only take what shows the tv stations prefer to broadcast.

There are no replays and no rewind to the parts you missed. When the show begins, it proceeds without waiting for you and so we often rush inside the house and make ourselves comfortable on the floor as our eyes were glued on the television making sure not to miss anything. This was the fun part of watching anime during that time.

As a little girl, the Voltes V show was also entertaining to watch. Choudenji Mashin Borutesu Faibu or Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V or just Voltes V in short, is about the invasion of the horned Boazanians on earth and Voltes V saving the earth from being colonized by the enemy. Voltes V is a giant robot operated by a team of five members: Kenichi, Ippei, Daijiro, Hiyoshi, and Megumi.

I was so young back then and didn't care much about its entire story although I enjoyed watching the show especially when Voltes V does his ultimate technique, the laser sword, wherein the robot who slash its sword into the enemy while forming a letter 'V'. When the laser sword is out, you know it's the end for the enemy.

Looking at the show as an adult, I appreciate that they made a good variation with the Voltes V team. There's two men, a lady, a plus-size character, and a kid. I remember cheering for the only lady on their team, Megumi. On the Filipino dubbed version, Megumi's name is Jamie.

If the laser sword was iconic, I know one of the parts of the show most of us enjoy watching was the transformation of the robot. When I was a little, I find it satisfying how each part fit perfectly together.

One lesson I could take from this anime is the importance of teamwork. Each of the members are assigned to operate a specific part of robot and if they don't work in sync or one is having trouble operating, the robot won't function properly.

Voltes V is one of the most popular anime shows in the Philippines. Ask any Filipino born from the 1970s to 2000s about this show and for sure they could tell something about it. For many, Voltes V has become part of their childhood. The video above is a vlog of Michael V, a famous Filipino actor/comedian, who is also a big fan of Voltes V. He narrated how he became a fan of the show, how he longed to have a Voltes V toy, and how the show became popular in the country. He spoke mostly in Filipino so I apologize for the non-Filipino speakers out there.

The opening song was also very popular back then. Even if we don't understand the song, we still sing it. The song is very catchy especially the intro.

Voltes V first aired in 1977 to 1978 with 40 episodes in total. The anime series was created by Saburo Yatsude and produced by Toei Company and Nippon Sunrise.
