D-Frag Casual Review

D-frag was first aired January 7 2014. It is a comedy show. And a pretty wacky one at that. This show was released when anime was still somewhat niche. Unlike today where more and more people are watching anime casually. I am very fond of this anime. I watched this show when I was just getting into anime. It was so unique that it caught my attention. I thought to myself "what is this" and "where could I watch more like it." Oh and as promised here's your tag @deraaa

This anime has a very unpredictable plot. Not in a well thought out sense but in a what just happened kind of way. It is not a story heavy show, this show focuses more on character interactions than telling a narrative. It does give some backstory to some characters usually through a quick flash back. But other than that comedy is this shows main focus. I know surprising but this show does it's comedy in a very particular way. The technique most commonly used for getting a laugh in this show is the straight man act. The straight man act is when someone does something weird, insane or just does something dumb. The straight man will usually call it out or at least wonder why to themselves. They will sometimes explain how dumb or insane the person is being. But this show uses the technique pretty much non stop. Since it seems like everyone is insane to an extent except for our main character Kazuma. He is our straight man throughout the show, calling out everyone's crazy and sometimes calling out his own crazy.

The show may use the straight man technique quite alot but it doesn't get old in my opinion. The levels of crazy in the shows characters just continues to progress as the show goes on. Also the show quickly introduces more and more characters, so you never get tired of one persons nonsense since there are so many others acting equally as crazy if not crazier.

This show has a colorful cast of characters that all have something wrong with them. As mentioned before they introduce alot of characters. Some you may see again others appear maybe once or twice. All of those characters have one distinct characteristic, just look unique, or both. Most of them never explain why they do what they do or why they look the way they look. Probably due to the fact that they are gone in a flash.

The shows main character Kazuma is forced to join the Game Creation Club at his school. He and the other club members find themselves in many crazy situations. Usually caused by one of the clubs members. Kazuma sometimes helps resolve the problem, other times he is just on the side lines watching the insanity unfold unable to stop it. He also causes his own fair share of conflict. Whether because of his ego, his unwillingness to cooperate, or just being roped into situations.

Overall I think this anime is worth your time. It's funny, unique, unpredictable, and a little insane. There are not many shows like it for good reason. It's not easy to maintain a balance of all those elements but I think D-Frag pulls it off nicely.
