Studio Ghibli has always given us wonderful stories since its inception. Castle in the Sky was a must-do review since it's one of those movies that I grew up with even though it's as old as I am.
Published in 1986, The Castle in the Sky is a masterpiece where fantasy and science fiction mix to create a beautiful story. The Japanese know how to handle this type of mix between two genres very well. The steampunk theme was something innovative for the time and surprising animation, even today it looks good despite all the years it has.
El estudio Ghibli siempre nos ha regalado maravillosas historias desde sus inicios. El castillo en el cielo era una reseña obligatoria que debía de hacer ya que es una de esas películas con las que crecí a pesar de que es tan vieja como yo.
Publicada en 1986, El castillo en el cielo es una obra maestra en donde la fantasía y la ciencia ficción se mezclan para dar pie a una hermosa historia. Este tipo de mezclas entre dos géneros los japoneses saben manejarlo muy bien. La temática steampunk era algo innovador para la época y la animación sorprendente, aun hoy en día luce bien pese a todos los años que tiene.
The story is about an orphan boy who works as a miner and suddenly he finds a girl floating in the sky. This girl was previously hunted by pirates called the Clan of Dola who wanted to steal a stone that contains a power.
The truth is that this stone is capable of opening the doors of a mythical floating island called LaPuta. The name of this island has a negative connotation in Spanish and comes from a book called "Gulliver's Travels" where its author, as a satire and knowing very well what it means in Spanish, used that name to report the damage he had done. the English crown to Ireland. This story is well known and the book is highly recommended.
Due to the name of this island we can laugh a lot in certain situations that take some parts of the film out of context but let's continue with the plot.
La historia va de un chico huérfano que trabajo como minero y de repente se encuentra con una chica flotando en el cielo. Esta chica fue previamente perseguida por unos piratas llamados el Clan de Dola que querían robarle una piedra que contiene un poder.
Lo cierto es que esta piedra es capaz de abrir las puertas de una isla mítica flotante llamada LaPuta. El nombre de esta isla tiene una connotación negativa en español y proviene de un libro llamado “Los viajes de Gulliver” en donde su autor a modo de sátira y sabiendo muy bien lo que significa en español uso ese nombre para denunciar los daños que había hecho la corona inglesa a Irlanda. Esta historia es muy conocida y el libro más que recomendado.
Debido al nombre de esta isla podremos reírnos mucho en ciertas situaciones que sacan de contexto algunas partes de la película pero continuemos con la trama.
Sheeta (the girl who fell floating) and Pazu (the orphan boy) flee from these pirates but they will not really be the real enemies of the story. Muska is an unscrupulous colonel who seeks the stone to establish himself with the power of the island and create a monarchy. The boundless ambition of this character is the real antagonist of the protagonists.
The steampunk theme is very well elaborated in the animation, showing us zeppelins and technology imagined by Jules Verne in his stories or simply nineteenth-century technology but mixed with fantasy which gives the film an even more original touch.
The film shows us how ambition can corrupt the souls of men, however there will always be noble spirits like those of the protagonists who are not carried away by power and greed.
Sheeta (la chica que cayo flotando) y Pazu (el niño huérfano) huyen de estos piratas pero estos realmente no serán los reales enemigos de la historia. Muska es un coronel sin escrúpulos que busca la piedra para establecerse con el poder de la isla y crear una monarquía. La ambición sin límites de este personaje es el real antagonista de los protagonistas.
La temática steampunk está muy bien elaborada en la animación, mostrándonos zepelines y tecnología imaginada por Julio Verne en sus historias o simplemente tecnología decimonónica pero mezclada con fantasía lo que le da un toque aún más original a la película.
La película nos muestra como la ambición puede corromper las almas de los hombres sin embargo siempre existirán espíritus nobles como los de los protagonistas que no se dejan llevar por el poder y la avaricia.
Ghibli Studios has always been known for giving us high-quality animations but beyond that they show us through their films deep messages from anti-war films such as the tomb of the fireflies to environmentalists like Princess Mononoke, turning all these animations into pure art.
As you can imagine, the soundtrack is perfect, reminding us a bit of one from Final Fantasy. That is another thing in which the Japanese excel very well, composing themes of unparalleled beauty in epic moments of the movies and of course this is no exception, being a key part of the entire film.
The nobility of Sheeta and Pazu is admirable, young characters but with a big heart who fight for the good in contrast to Colonel Muska's desires for power. Although pirates are also greedy, they become allies of the protagonists and it may also be that one of the characters that I enjoyed the most was Dola, this is a character who looks out for their interests at first but who on the phone is a noble soul that was only corrupted by gold.
Estudios Ghibli siempre se ha caracterizado por darnos unas animaciones de alta calidad pero más allá de eso nos muestran a través de sus películas unos mensajes profundos desde películas anti bélicas como la tumba de las luciérnagas hasta ecologistas como la princesa Mononoke convirtiendo a todas estas animaciones en arte puro.
Como podrán imaginarse, la banda sonora es perfecta, recordándonos un poco a alguna de Final Fantasy. Eso es otra cosa en la que los nipones se destacan muy bien, componiendo temas de una belleza sin igual en momentos épicos de las películas y por supuesto que esto no es una excepción, siendo parte clave de toda la película.
Es admirable la nobleza de Sheeta y Pazu, personajes jóvenes pero con un gran corazón que luchan por el bien en contraste de los deseos de poder del coronel Muska. Pese a que los piratas también son avariciosos, estos se tornan aliados de los protagonistas y también puedo ser que uno de los personajes con que más disfrute fue Dola, este es un personaje que vela por sus intereses al principio pero que en el fono es un alma noble que solo fue corrompida por el oro.
There is very little to criticize about this movie. Some specialized critics have criticized it for its dubbing into Spanish, because they kept the name of LaPuta but that's the way it is in the original work and I don't see the reason why we should change it. Perhaps the only culprit is Hayao Miyazaki for not corroborating the meaning in Spanish. Who knows? The truth is that dubbing in Spanish seems to me far superior to that of English, as in most cases.
In short, this movie is a classic that every good anime fan must see, a fantastic story full of adventures and setbacks with a beautiful message, an exquisite soundtrack, and a fairly complete story like only Studio Ghibli movies can do. This is an unrepeatable classic.
Hay muy poco que criticar de esta película. Algunos críticos especializados la han criticado por su doblaje al español, debido a que conservaron el nombre de LaPuta pero así es en la obra original y no veo el motivo por el cual nosotros debamos cambiarlo. Quizás el único culpable sea Hayao Miyazaki por no corroborar el significado en español ¿Quién sabe? Lo cierto es que el doblaje en español me parece muy superior al de inglés, como en la mayoría de los caso.
En resumen, esta película es un clásico que todo buen fan del anime debe ver, una historia fantástica llena de aventuras y contratiempos con un hermoso mensaje, una banda sonora exquisita y una historia bastante completa como solo las películas del estudio Ghibli pueden hacer. Esto es un clásico irrepetible.
