¡Yo, welcome my Hive readers!

In Anime The Slice of Life genre is currently saturated with moe girls doing mundane things that wouldn't be half as interesting if they weren't done by cute girls, hence the phrase "Slice of Nothing Ever Happens". And as early as 2009 we would see the answer to this excess that in 2012 would have its respective anime adaptation.

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (The Daily Life of High School Boys) is about Tadakuni, Hidenori and Yoshitake, normal high school boys who live a normal life. The premise of this series is simply to make a Slice of Life but with a main cast made up of boys who are not particularly attractive and attend an all-male school. Bucking the trend is not a very lucrative thing to do so how did it become a cult Anime? Easy, this is an absurd comedy, and it's not pretending to be a normal Slice of Life and then throwing in things like robots or talking cats. Anime takes advantage of mundane real life situations and with that they put our protagonists in the most embarrassing, confusing, and hopeless situations. This is because everyone here is either crazy or very unlucky (or both in case of Mitsuo), as if they were an extreme version of your friends.

At the beginning of each chapter there will be a section of breaking the fourth wall where the protas discuss some clichés of the medium to self-criticism, just from the first chapter Hidenori imagined that this would be an adventure anime with mechas for being a collaboration between Sunrise with Squarenix to end up disappointed to learn that it will be of their daily lives. For a series without a first world teenager plot to last 12 episodes, the humor would have to be very good... And it is! Humor is a subjective thing, so in order to judge it I need to focus on the wit with which they were made, which the series enjoys with everyone's favorite gack being "The Literary Girl". But the girls are not left out, at the end is the section "High school girls are fun" where here we do have girls as the main focus, but they are not moe at all, here the girls are stronger and more daring than the boys, that includes this section where even the most docile of them can have a dark side.

The bad thing is that its realism turns out to be a double-edged sword, since it is noticeable when the author starts to run out of wit when the jokes become shorter and more focused on making you feel identified, I don't blame him, he was trying to create absurd situations but keeping a realistic atmosphere, but if the lives of normal and comfortable people were so interesting there would be no entertainment and therefore the Anime, even the most boring novels resort to cheap tension events like accidents or murder to keep the attention. And while school anime don't have these kinds of clichés, they have their own such as fanservice or moe or a romantic plot, The Literary Girl is the closest thing to that, which despite the damage they have done to the industry, it's almost commercial suicide not to include something you can stand out with beyond bucking the trend on a superficial level.

Protagonistas | Protagonists

Ouch.
  • Tadakuni: The "Main" character in the series who acts as the voice of reason. He usually gets involved in Hidenori and Yoshitake's nonsense even when he disapproves of it. He has a younger sister who turns out to be stronger than him and his friends. He also works part-time at a pizza restaurant. Despite being introduced as a main character, he appears in fewer and fewer episodes because, in the words of his friends: you're too normal and the editors only want the "interesting" life of high school students. In other words, they took him out for being a boring killjoy.... Ouch.

  • Hidenori: He is the fantasy-minded four-eyed guy. He is the one who usually gets the group involved in crazy plans, it is thanks to this that he would get the leading role in the second half of the series. He is also the one who stars in the subplot "The Literary Girl" where he gets involved in uncomfortable situations with Yassan, a girl who seeks him out to make her romance novel fantasies come true.

  • Yoshitake: He is the jovial boy who usually ingratiates himself with Hidenori's witticisms (it's as if Hidenori were Batman and the Robin). While he may seem like a rebel, it turns out that since childhood he was interested in justice and doing the right thing. He has an extremely violent older sister because of his bachelorhood.

  • President: He is, redundantly, the President of the North Sanada High School Student Council, but he lets the vice-president do most of the work of his body, he seems to have a taste for annoying the president of the East High School, Ringo, and then he gets what he deserves (did I mention that the girls in this series were scary?). He recruited a gang of delinquents to be part of the council, who despite their appearance and still considering themselves delinquents, are now examples of sensitivity and good behavior.

  • Vicepresident: He is (¿seriously? ¡¿doesn't have a name either?!) the vice president of the student council at North Sanada High School. He has a fearsome appearance and looks older than he is, yet he is a gentleman deeply grateful to the president for getting his life on the right track.

  • Motoharu: He studies in the same class as the protagonist trio. Despite his appearance of a delinquent with a gloomy look that would make you Bullyng, Motoharu turns out to be a shy and quiet boy with a talent for cooking. In childhood, his older sister used to bully him by passing it off as a game.

  • Karasawa: She always wears a cap, which is why there are myths about what she hides under it. She is the one who knows best how to deal with the opposite sex and usually appears also in "High school girls are funny" where the real reason why he wears a cap is shown.

  • Ringo: President of the student council of the East High School, for women only. She is a competitive personality and experiences a great rivalry with the president of the North High School. She is frustrated to recognize the superiority in order and hospitality that reigns in the male student council room, she is a bit of a dummy so she is easily fooled and has trouble taking hints.

  • Mitsuo: A member of the North Sanada High School rugby team (although he really likes football). He is quite naive, this combined with his bad luck makes him be in the most unhappy situations in this anime. They even underestimate his intelligence so much that they gossip about him around him.

While it's pretty average to simple, it has its personality in terms of facial expressions, although it tends to repeat the eye shading for seriousness and highlighting the fangs for anger... well, for many things in fact. Here, the drawing of the eyes of the minor characters is particularly recurrent, and that for some reason the sisters of Tadakuni, Yoshitake and Motoharu do the same to them despite being recurrent, even this detail was also used for a joke.

The Ending "Ohisama" prefers to rescue the more ridiculous side of anime with a skit accompanied by a duet singing a cheesy song about the sun that ironically turned out to please me. Honorable mention to the theme of the literary girl that was also a more conventional and quiet ending (ignoring how it ends).

CONCLUSION.png

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou brought freshness to a genre that was going down the drain a while ago, sacrificing the biggest commercial hook they had in Japan, and after the idea took off at full speed, it slowly began to have bland moments and on top of that it got rid for a long time of the only character that created a contrast with the stupidities of the rest of the kids, being this role taken by anyone even breaking with their characterizations. At least it's admirable for being more transparent and less hedonistic entertainment. While another absurd comedy school anime (which I'll talk about another time) would end up surpassing it, it's still a recommendable entry, and still gets a 5.85 out of 10, if they want to round it to 6/10.
